What not to wear...

Our latest Gransnet guest blogger is Amanda from The Women's Room. Her post - What not to wear takes a look at fashion trends best avoided at all costs by those of us who are now a little older and wiser.

Do you agree with her list? And what would you add to it?

Bring on the "Proceed with Caution" label. I've often been tempted to tell another woman in the changing rooms that what she is trying on simply doesn't do her any favours. It does seem wrong to keep quiet when the salesgirl is just standing there nodding, but I've never yet dared.

Carole1961 I find Outlet Centres excellent, in particular M & S for clothes, Pavers and Clarkes for footwear.
And if you know your sizes, eBay for new or nearly new.
I love the 'good labels' such as Phase Eight, Kaliko, LK Bennett, Hobbs but only buy these on eBay.

With regard to what to wear depends it greatly on your height/sze/shape and what you like.
I have my own rules for what (I think) suits me with comfort coming first. I find jeggings were ok with boots in winter but don't rate them for summer, the balance without boots looks wrong on me because I am bigger on top. I don't wear 3/4 cropped trousers as one leg is unsightly with veins, so I choose boot cut jeans, straight leg jeans, often roll up a straight leg cotton trouser to just above the ankle. I like ankle grazers for summer. For comfort I wear sneakers, trainers or a loafer. And always a top long enough to cover the bum.

Dressing up for me means a nice longish jacket, black or navy jacquard ankle grazers or tapered trousers and patent or suede flats. Very often a scarf/pashmina to finish off.

I did a big clear out and sold loads of my unused clothes on eBay.
Now I don't have a lot of clothes but every item is in use and fits.

Would really like a blog on what I could wear.
Where I can buy over 50's clothing without breaking the bank would also be a great article.

WHAT ! and spoil my reputation.

annodomini Tue 14-Apr-15 21:19:44

Better keep out of the way, pompa!

OH Nooooooooooooooooo Not leggings again ! I got in sooooooo much trouble last time.

amarmai Tue 14-Apr-15 20:50:13

Lupin i wear leggings or pants with tops/tunics that end above the knee. I can cycle in dresses or skirts but prefer to wear leggings with them too unless it's very hot. Coats or jackets ending at the knee or shorter are easy to ride in. I don't like long loose clothes as they tend to flap and catch on the bike.

Soutra Tue 14-Apr-15 13:20:53

Oh dear, that should have read "exhibition" oops.

I have just been to the "Fashion on the Ration" e hi inion at the Imperial War Museum about clothes and "make do and mend" in WW 2. I was struck by how glamorous, smart and stylish women looked and I am not talking the rich and famous. Ordinary women who feminised their uniform or working gear with lippy , " stocking" cream if they had to go bare-legged, and curled hair and then scrubbed up to look really chic with handbags heels and a cheeky little hat when they went out. It helped that the were mostly very slim and had good posture and small waists, but the effort they took to keep up their morale puts most girls and women today in the shade!

I think the poppers would rub against the saddle, Lupinsmile. I don't cycle on the roads any more because my locality is very hilly and I used to arrive at my destination a sweaty mess! For spinning classes I wear shorts-shaped padded pants covered by my usual baggy-style capri exercise bottoms, which cover a multitude of lumps and bumps. The only Lycra ones I possess (brightly multi-coloured) are worn with an extra long dipped hem top, way below bum level.

A friend wore chamois inner shorts when she did Lands End to John O'Groats a few years back. When she woke up in Hospital after an accident, she was embarrassed to find she was still wearing them in her bed. I don't think the staff knew what to make of them!

What do Gransnet cyclers wear. Is anyone brave enough to wear neoprene or lycra? Congratulations if you can - particularly cycling shorts.
I find myself thinking nostalgically of items I could once wear but now can't.
For example - a bikini, ballet flats ( find myself in what's become a ubiquitous old lady style - the Mary Jane), skirts and trousers without elastic waists.
The latter, without elastic waists and in the correct size for everywhere else mean that I sport a muffin top not to envy. I find myself reverting to toddler fashion in my later years. However - not dungarees or anything all in one. The state of the bladder would not make them a wise choice. Perhaps someone (not me) could trial a onesie for older ladies with press studs around the inner leg seams. Now there's a vision. grin

The one cardinal sin is showing your knicker line. Not nice at any age but pretty horrible on pensioners. Although not as bad as the back view of your gusset on plump women who will not wear anything long enough to cover their rear. Horrible sight when they bend over. Oh the gift to see ourselves etc..

biddymarie Thu 23-Oct-14 23:17:31

I have just read the last post the omg bra,I tried one of those in xl & i got it stuck could'nt move i was in the changing room for ages could'nt get it off. They are deffinitily not made for ladies with a how shall i say bigger chest lol.

biddymarie Thu 23-Oct-14 23:10:27

I smiled @ some of the things ladies of the older generation should'nt wear,To be quite honest we wore some of them the 1st time around lol.I love my trainers as has i have trouble with my feet (i won't go into it lol) they are comfortable but i do'nt do jogging. And if some of the younger generation could see their selves from the back in these black stretch tight legging they wear most of them are stretched to within a inch of their life also most are see-through you can see what colour their pants are.
I must admit i think it all depends on the lady herself some people can carry modern fashion off fine.I went to a shop while hubby waited in the car as i walked out of the store from a distance i saw this Bleached blonde fringed, straight angular cut,Navy blue tight short dress,Navy blue stocking & navy really high heels,Whats wrong you may say with this, well the lady when close up was a wrinkled 70plus,Just looked all wrong.
when i got back to the car i said to hubby did you see that lady,He said only from the back she really could'nt walk on them heels she was stumbling all over the place that say's it all.

rubylady - my bras have to be all comfortable but as I am of the big-booby/narrower in the back department I have to get what really fits properly with a good underwire -scaffolding- and large cup size.
This means buying Fantasie or the like which is around £38.... However knowing my make and size I buy on ebay usually for under a tenner including p & p

I once thought I'd try those that pull on over the head. OMG.... just not made for the likes of me.

janerowena Tue 16-Sep-14 11:28:35

My mother told me to always dress up, never down, and the worst that can happen is that others will wish that they had made a bit more effort. So I dress up to go out, no matter where, and look a total slob at home. grin I have given a few newer friends a bit of a shock if they have called in on the offchance.

Soutra Tue 16-Sep-14 11:23:37

I do have a wardrobe full of smart jackets which I used to wear to work which rarely see the light of day now. Likewise heels - I live in trainers or comfy Hotters but still believe you should wear clothes appropriate to your activity - OK that means jeans or trousers but if I am going out to lunch or to a talk or book club it is nice to look out something different.

rubylady Tue 16-Sep-14 01:40:43

Do other people have "indoor" clothes and "outdoor" clothes? I do. I have indoor bras, the ones you pull over your head which are really comfortable and uncomfortable ones for outdoor, lol. Also, I have indoor lounging wear, which I will wear to walk the dog in the dark, but smart clothes for shopping etc. smile

After a year of feeling woefully old and lacking in style compared to the yummy mummies that congregate at DGD1's school at 3:10 every day, I have decided to stick with what makes me feel comfortable. So it's off with the smart black trousers and stylish shoes and on with the jeans and trainers - much better for chasing 4yr old DGD2, and more practical for driving. I love leggings too, but the legs are not up to that degree of public display so keep those for indoors. Such a relief after years of business suits and feet-killing shoes.

Having caught a sideways glance at myself in the new mirror in the brand new bathroom I think it is a burkha for me. Either that or remove my glasses before I go into the bathroom.

Tegan Thu 19-Jun-14 10:32:53

I've probably said this before on this thread but no time to check; I love peplums..my favourite Biba dress from when I was young had a peplum and I've been wanting a dress like it ever since. I think they're especially good if you're pear shaped like me.

Gagagran Thu 19-Jun-14 10:21:28

Just make sure the burkha is not too colourful anno. Obviously you need to merge into the shadows! grin

AmMaz Thu 19-Jun-14 10:18:12

I wanna know what the problem is with peplums? Seriously. Please spell it out so's I know. Is it to do with size? I'm a size 8 - is that why I think it looks OK or is there some other problem with peplums that I am missing and actually will be making me look ridiculous? Please enlighten me asap!
