Gran-lit. At last!

Our latest guest blog post is from author Hilary Boyd - whose recent novel Thursdays in the Park has been hailed as the start of a new literary phenomenon...gran-lit.

Books featuring grandmothers have tended to portray them as peripheral characters, trouble makers or babysitters... But, argues Hilary, isn't it about time the literary world woke up to the fact that grans don't have to be old, celibate (etc etc...) and stuck on the sidelines?

Good writing transcends age-group. Jane Austen's work is all about young women, but age has not changed my enjoyment of it. I could still enjoy Swallows and Amazons for that matter. What I want is a good plot with interesting characters, well written, irrespective of the age of the writer or his/her characters.

I agree, anno. I certainly wouldn't search out books simply because of the age group they seemed to be aimed at. How depressing if all we found interesting at our age were novels portraying elderly lives laced with nostalgia for days gone by.

You read any of Conn Iggledun jabanj1057.

He makes Ghengis Kahn sexy!!!

And then there's Bernard Cornwell.

And John Grisham. And Lee Child's Jack Reacher books. etc. etc.

What has age got to do with it? confused

Your right! age should not be the issue, only the substance of the work. Age group previously mentioned does not have work out there that embraces the more mature! Thanks j05, will certainly give them a whirl! Looking forward to last episode of "Last Tango in Halifax" this evening. A superb piece of writing. Hope they do more!

Feel a little bit miffed. When I first joined Gransnet I was told off (and had the post removed ) for mentioning my Granlit novel which is an e-book. This can't be advertising now because it is not under my own name but I think some readers might enjoy it - it is funny rather than steamy. Give me the Ok and I will give reference. Otherwise not....

Ah, but you have to write a "blog" about your book! Then you can have the free advertising. (And so can Amazon hmm)

Just chuck a few words together. Any old stuff.
