Loved it. Rivetting.I believe Tony Blair said to him,'' Alan, you really WERE poor!''

This is one I really want to read. I heard him talking about it a while ago. I've always thought he is one of the more bearable politicians and understands how most people live. Seems too normal to ever make it to the top.

I don't think much of him as a politician but heard him talking on the radio about the book and was riveted. It is on my list. I am so amazed by these women who keep their families together against all the odds.

I have just finished reading This Boy by Alan Johnson. Found it a really good read, the poverty this man suffered is truly shocking. Growing up in the Fifties was hard for so many people. I really love the way his sister Linda worked hard to provide and protect Alan in unbelievably hard circumstances, especially after the death of Lily. (Alan and Linda's mother) I have a new found respect for this man, and am left wondering what the next stage of the story is. Bought the hardback and it will be now going on my bookcase. A good example of our social history.

I have just finished reading it and really enjoyed it. It was only £8 on Kindle, whereas the hardback is about £16, I think.

I usually avoid politicians' autobiographies, but this sounds so different that I am determined to download it as soon as I finish my current novel. it gets nothing but 100% reviews on Amazon. Thanks for the recommendation. I have just seen him on the Andrew Marr Show which reinforces my determination.

I will get the book - was interested before you wrote about it Mamie. - I always like watching him on TV especially with Michael Portillo and Andrew Neil after Question Time - if I can stay awake!

Yes it is a Beatles song and he chose it because he was a Beatles fan. He was born in 1950 so the cultural references were strong for me too.

Hi Mamie, thanks for this, will get it. It popped up in my 'recommended for you' list on Amazon and I for some reason thought about the Beatles. I think they had a song with that title.

Didn't want to bury this in another thread as it is such a brilliant book. It is by Alan Johnson, the politician and is about his childhood in London. He grew up in terrible housing conditions and grinding poverty. After their father left them, their mother, who had a heart condition, continued to hold down several jobs and the two children worked part-time as soon as they could. Their mother died when they were sixteen and thirteen and Alan's sister managed to keep them together rather than let him go into care. It is an extraordinary story of courage in adversity and I think people would enjoy it no matter what their political opinions. It certainly proves that not all politicians are people who have privileged backgrounds and no understanding of the real world. It finishes when he becomes a postman and gets married at eighteen.
