It's International Book Week. The Rules: Grab the nearest book to you, turn to page 52, post the fifth sentence as your status. Don't mention the title and share the rules as part of your status.

"I pulled on a pair of cotton gloves and wandered over to the bed, whistling softly through my teeth - a habit that severely tries my husband, friends, and anyone working near me in the library"

"No smell came from the hand which told him it must be fresh - in this summer warmth probably less than twenty four hours old." ( sorry - hope everyone has finished their breakfast! grin)

Elegran Tue 24-Sept-13 08:42:19

I have added the title and author of my quote to my profile, if anyone wants to know.

Gagagran Tue 24-Sept-13 08:37:36

The following morning a cheque had arrived, accompanied by the first of the letters.

I wonder if this would make a coherent story if all the sentences were run as one - a bit like the game of consequences? I like this - it's quirky!

Elegran Tue 24-Sept-13 08:30:59

Ana It is just meant to be a quote from a book - any book. Guessing the title and author is a nice extra, but not obligatory. Perhaps we could add those in a temporary note on our profile for people who would like to know and are tempted to read the book.

Yes, it was copied from Facebook and does mean Facebook status. I should have deleted that before posting, but it was past my bedtime.

I remember a thread on the same subject previously. Was it from Bags a year ago?

Seeing all the replies when I logged in was very gratifying. Does this mean that a lot of people like puzzles and similar entertainment? We should have more of them. Prizes and winners are not necessary, the pleasure of the exercise is enough.

"We have bought this house and kept it spic and span for 20 years or more", a housewife in St. Paul's Road told the local paper.

MiceElf Tue 24-Sept-13 07:42:00

The book quotes Owun, a Northumbrian scribe who compiled the glosses for one part of the Rushworth gospel, but his conventions are not identical with the type of Northumbrian found in the Lindisfarne gospels.

MiceElf Tue 24-Sept-13 07:38:00

Dialects!

Notso Tue 24-Sept-13 07:37:25

And caught him by the horse hair plume that dangled on his crest

Partly because I was reading this yesterday: @EarlyScotland: Aethelflaed, daughter of Alfred the Great, forged a military alliance with the Scots and Strathclyde Britons t.co/Rk0A4dLt6G

thatbags Tue 24-Sept-13 07:34:30

mouse, I need to know what the former and the latter are!!!!!!

MiceElf Tue 24-Sept-13 07:30:36

Certainly, there are enough variations within both Mercian and Northumbrian for scholars to postulate northern forms of the former and southern forms of the latter.

kittylester Tue 24-Sept-13 07:27:55

Meant to say, I like this thread - thank you!!

thatbags Tue 24-Sept-13 07:19:52

No sentences on p52 but this is the fifth whatever from a table:

"Schismatomma, white to warm grey, trees, various, Soredia concolourous or paler and becoming confluent."

kittylester Tue 24-Sept-13 07:14:27

Elegran, I expected this to be a jingle thread. sunshine

kittylester Tue 24-Sept-13 07:12:42

My current book, Heartbreak Hotel by Deborah Moggach, is blank on page 52!! grin

All the books in the room where I am sitting are non-fiction reference books. The nearest one:

A similar position exists in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, although it remains unclear f all the district councils are to become Counties.

The nearest fiction (from another room):
"Well, then, we must bear one another's burdens."

Aka Mon 23-Sept-13 23:12:28

Sel Mon 23-Sept-13 23:07:49

Sel Mon 23-Sept-13 23:07:08

Perhaps if we add them all together...

Aka Mon 23-Sept-13 23:05:54

It was fate.

Sel Mon 23-Sept-13 23:05:33

"Were you sleeping?"

Utterly confused - is this supposed to encourage reading amongst those who don't?
