This is an old-ish book, got it on my Kindle, but think you can still get it from Amazon [or maybe the library.]By old-ish I mean written in the 1980's or 1990's. It's a good read, a supernatural thriller set on the Welsh border. He also writes for Y/A so you need to get the adult books [I made a mistake and got Marco's Pendulum by Rickman, just about readable, but obviously not for the adult market.]However, if you scare easily, the book is not for you. I like British supernatural thrillers better than from USA as we have the historical 'edge' here.Rickman uses the kind of history [anglo-saxon] featuring burial mounds, dowsing, small country villages, dolmens etc.

he is an excellent writer who manages to capture the atmosphere of the border country (where I was originally from and where I am fortunate to live).
If you like supernatural and crime then read his 'merrily watkins' series - preferably in order as he has written about 11 in the series. I find them fascinating as I know the country around here very well and there are characters like 'gomer parry' still around - not yet eased out by the 4 x 4 well-heeled country dwellers.

Hi mollie Gomer Parry is also in Curfew [he leases his tractors etc] and is a good character. Is the Merrily Watkins series for adults?

I'm a huge Merrily Watkins fan who usually really dislikes detective type books! Definitely for grownups. Lots of Border Counties interest and a good selection of characters. I bought the first in the series when I went to shelter from the rain in Ludlow whilst waiting for a P+R bus and felt I should buy something! (Lovely shop and no pressure at all from the proprietor.)

granniepam I assume you have read the Ludlow story - which I think is one of his best - but then I know Ludlow well.
his latest - the Magus of Hay - is not so good - no Gomer Parry or Jane or Eirion or Lol Robinson feature in it.
My father who was a Herefordshire man through and through used to talk and swear like Gomer - and as Phil Rickman is local I think he knows his dialect.
definitely for adults as they do have some gory bits smile

What, no Gomer, Jane, Irene or Lol in the latest bookshock!!!Thanks for the info*mollie65*, I've not read it yet (been waiting for the paperback and a holiday in which to read it!) The development of the different characters over the series has been one of the attractions sad
