Lamentation- C J Samson

Have you tried the similar series with John Shakespeare (Will's brother!) as the "private eye/detective" character? By Rory Clements and lighter reads. I enjoyed Lamentation and kept on going and was rewarded in the end!

Just picked Lamentation up again - not bad but as yet hasn't grabbed me as much as the previous ones - about a quarter of the way through so will keep with it. Will have a look at Dominion.

I really liked Dominion, thought it would make a great film.
have now got Lamentation on my Kindle as it was a cheap buy, but the Shardlake series is not my favourite.

A fantastic read have loved them all find the characters and the historical detail enthralling

I've read them all in sequence and think I will have to re-read to get them fixed in my mind. This author really gives us the sense of Tudor London - the sights, sounds, even smells - and squalor.

Dominion is good and (scarily) plausible!

I have read all the Shardlake books except Lamentation, and it never seems to be in our library so I will reserve it next time I'm in, but on my last visit to the library I picked up Dominion, which he wrote after Winter in Madrid. Haven't had a chance to get into it yet though.

It's on the sofa - waiting for me to finish Summertime - hubby says it was great

I adore the Shardlake books and raced through Lamentations. Should have rationed myself like Deedaa, if it's going to be a long wait for the next one.

At the moment I'm reading a book in a similar vein, one of the John Shakespeare series. Recommended to me by a friend who knew I loved Shardlake. It's OK, but it's made me realise just how good CJ Sansome is. The dialogue doesn't sound as real, for one thing.

I have Winter in Madrid but haven't read it yet, maybe I'll read that next.

whitewave C.J.Sansom was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in 2012. It is incurable but treatable so hopefully he will still be writing for a while. Coincidentally I first found his books when I needed something to read while DH was in hospital having a stem cell transplant for his own Multiple Myeloma! Shardlake and Barak were a great antidote to worry!

I've just finished Lamentation after spending two weeks reading it VERY slowly. If it's going to be another two years before the next one I wanted it to last as long as possible!
I really think this is the best Shardlake so far, very engrossing and satisfying to read and he's always so good on the historical detail.

Glad that some of you love Winter In Madrid, it's been one of my favourites for quite a while.However, dare I say this? I really don't like the Shardlake books at all.I do like historical fiction, but find the central character off putting and the stories give me a feeling of something like unease.I thought Revelation was pretty horrible [and I also guessed who it was too early in the story.]I am probably in the minority in this, though.He is certainly a marvellous writer.

Haven`t read it yet, but definitely will be doing, I love Shardlake and Barak.

I had been waiting for this book and wasn't disappointed. I read it in a couple of days as I couldn't put it down. I hope that we will have one or two more Shardlake books.

Atqui you can read any of the books as stand alone, but you would do better to start with the first book. Much more enjhoyment to be had.

It's a compelling read but I found it darker than the others. So glad he is still writing.

Winter in Madrid was excellent too. (A non Shardlake)

Is it part of a series or can it be read as stand alone?

I've had it on my kindle for a while now. I'm saving it, cos once I start reading it, it will be - well - read. And I want it to be there, waiting for me.

I am in love with Shardlake. And Barak.

I hope Mr Sansome continues for a long, long, time.

I was lucky enough to be given an early copy of this - just as wonderful as his earlier tales of Shardlake. Although carrying it on and off the tube to and from GNHQ put a serious crick in my neck as it's a big book

I thought that I had read that C J Samson was seriously ill? I had thought that there would be no more Shardlakes so whoopee! will add to my wish list and read after I have finished my current read.
