I love 'The Secret Garden' reading it first as a child and re-visiting as an adult many times! I find it so enchanting and it has inspired me to grow flowers too!

The time travellers wife it's a wonderful story that's I've re read several times

The Paying Guests by Sarah Waters. A totally believable and realistic period drama, outlining the devastating effect of an illicit love affair. A compelling story-line that kept me guessing until the very end.

I loved Robot in the Garden by Deborah Instal - the highs, lows & laughs of "adopting" a robot who was remarkably toddler like in many ways!

Regalo Mon 07-Dec-15 21:13:34

Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. Although not my usual genre, I was totally absorbed by the story of the building of a cathedral and how many lives were entwined with this.

I love The Collector by John Fowles - it is a fantastic book with a particularly good ending. I studied this for A Level and have re-read several times since.

I normally go for cheesy chick lit books but my absolute favorite book is Pride and Prejudice. I love how all of the characters and personalities work together and I can really relate to Lizzy- just need my Mr Darcy now smile

Loved reading Rose Harbour in bloom by Debbie Macomber. It was the 1st of her books i read and i just couldnt put it down. Wasnt disapointed when the 2nd in that series came out as it was just as good. This is a brilliant prize. Have had a break from reading because i had 3 young children, and had no time. Only started reading again this time last year and have managed to read about 30 books this year. cant get my nose out the books, carry them everywhere in case i get a spare 5 mins lol

Any of Noel Barber's books, not fashionable now, but well researched, and each story was so evocative of different areas of WW2, I can read them time and time again

Any of the first three of Helen Forresters autobiographical novels about her family life in Liverpool during the period in between the wars. I can and have reread them time and time again. They are both inspirational and thought provoking (Twopence to cross the Mersey , Liverpool Miss and By the waters of Liverpool)

My favourite book is Necroscope 3 by Brian Lumbley. Full of action, suspense & horror, Main character has supernatural powers one of which is being able to talk with the dead, they will even rise from the dead him. Did I also mention the vampires from another dimension. Take a look at this, you will not be disappointed.

My favourite book is Wuthering heights by Emily Bronte. I first read it at school and surprisingly have loved it since. I like the portrayal of the characters from the mysterious Heathcliffe and his relationship to the Earnshaw family. The stunning Yorkshire scenery adds to the drama and the powerful storyline continues through the book.

Life after Life by Kate Atkinson. I've read all her novels, but this is my favourite.

Jamaica Inn - Daphne Du Maurier. I lived not far from Jamaica Inn and back in the 60's it was eerie! I read this book every two years, more if I have time and it haunts me!! Why do I read it then? I love it!m

My favourite book is I know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou. Actually it's part of a set of books detailing her life story. She had a very interesting life and I loved the whole set of books.

My favourite book is The Cuckoo's Calling by J.K Rowling (who wrote it under the pseudonym of Robert Gailbraith). I love detective books and this one is so well written! It is full of twists and turns and I was kept guessing right until the very end. A great read.

the lord of the rings, neve quiter sure if it is a trilogy or one novel in 3 parts, I read it when I was 10 & was my initiation into adult fantasy. I still love the way it stimulates the imagination

Countryfan Mon 07-Dec-15 18:04:34

Excuse Me, Your Life is Waiting by Lynn Grabhorn is my favourite. Not a literary masterpiece but incredibly thought provoking. It links many thoughts and belief systems in a positive and practical manner which can be adopted by anyone in everyday life.

Alice in wonderland, adventure, drama and cats, a must read

barbaras31 Mon 07-Dec-15 16:48:22

The first adult book I read at age 12 was Agatha Christies - The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. It's still one of my favourites many, many years later.

Five minutes peace- when I used to read this to my children, they loved it , but I lived it.

My ultimate favourite is Wild Swans by Jung Chang. Published in 1991 this is an epic biographical tale spanning a century of three generations of women in China. It offered a real insight into how harsh the life was for women in Imperial and Communist China. Although sometimes a difficult read I found it really uplifting. It has sold 13 million copies worldwide which speaks volumes. Every woman should read this book!
