Fiction books for 7 year old GS

My DGS is 7 and reads fluently like an adult. He is very hooked on snakes, the jungle, sea life and wildlife and avidly devours any non-fiction book on these subjects.

We are trying to source some fiction books that cover the same areas, in order to give him some idea of how exciting stories can be. I am struggling to find suitable books as some seem too old (and rather scary) and others are a bit twee and full of "babyish" pictures.

I would be very grateful for any suggestions you might be able to offer.

Hello, I sell Usborne books, we may have something to interest him. Here is a link to our catalogue. Let me know if you need any information.

My granddaughter was very keen on the extensive Animal Ark series, quite realistic stories about children and animals in different settings and countries.
I've only actually read a few but one was about children discovering poachers in Africa and helping to get them arrested. I found it both gripping and informative.
Classics like Black Beauty, Charlotte's Web perhaps. Michael Morpurgo's Farm Boy, several others by him maybe.
The Once and Future King by TB White has a fascinating, realistic scene in which the young hero is changed into a bird of prey. Lovely description from the bird's point of view.
Librarians and bookshop personnel will, in my experience, be pleased to advise you too.

The Animal Ark books are on Amazon, you might find some too 'domestic' but there are titles about wolves, deer, and Huskies, for example.
The ' author' is Lucy Daniels but actually a whole group of different writers, that's why the books within the series are so varied in their stories. They aren't the kind of series which can be samey and predictable.

Lots of thanks - I have sent my DD these suggestions and I know she will be delighted.

DGS clearly has a scientific mind - but it would be a shame if he did not also embrace the joy of fiction.

It's not on the subjects you mention, but for light relief the David Walliams books for children are very funny and popular with a lot of children, my 12 yr old grandson, who is also very bright, loves them.

Also books by Michael Mpurgo, there is one about a greyhound, and one about children sent to Australia and sailing, which includes some chapters about an animal refuge., probably others. They are aimed at older children.

I asked my DGD to help answer your question and she said everybody in her primary school reads the Beast Quest series. Hope this helps. She liked Kensuke's Kingdom, Michael Murporgo.

At that age mine read the Beast quest book and dinosaur cove. They are exciting and are both a series of adventure books. The problem with good readers is that they may not understand the nuances of a book for older children.
