Multicultural / anti racism books for children

When my children were small I got them a lot of books from Letterbox Library as we lived in a very 'white' middle class area, and I wanted to broaden their outlook.

I really liked them, as the characters were diverse in ethnicity and lifestyle, but the stories were not political or preachy - the characters just happened to be X Y or Z.

This was a while ago, though, and I can't speak for them now - I'd say they will be worth a look though.

Why is this necessary? Just let them enjoy their childhood reading.

First Google to look. There are loads.

It isn't just about educating. It's about showing them not everyone is white. Giving a real representation of the world.

I'd just go through kids books online and pick some with different ethnicities. My daughter had multicultural books when she was young, 30 years ago. It's easier these days.

JudyBruke....Every child pictured in your link is white. I don't understand why you're advertising it on this thread. Or am I missing something?

I used to teach that age group Atqui. There are absolutely loads of books which have positive role models of all ethnicities. Also many books are available that discuss various topics in the PSHE curriculum ie kindness to others, differences etc.
Have a look on Amazon.

Afraid I have to disagree. My granddaughter who’s parents are not in the least racist or prejudiced in any way , is obviously influenced by her peers.

Also the younger one 4, is being led to believe in gender stereotypes ( none of which she has learnt at home or from us. ) clothing ,Sports etc
Sometimes fictional books can reinforce positive beliefs. Never mind , I shall look online and take pot luck with what I can find.

That wonderful character " Mr Tumble " on children's tv has taught a lot over the years by introducing ( without fuss and bother ) children from different lands and also those with physical differences. His teachings have been excellent.

I really don’t think it’s children we need to educate Atqui as they tend not to judge the colour of someone’s skin .

They teach all that with books at school nowadays Atqui if you are worried that your DGC need to know.
DGD aged 6 showed me all her books last year at school.
Maybe find that out first, as it may not be needed?
