I have read the first novel and almost finished the second. Fantastic story about a family during the seige of Leningrad.
It speaks of their terrible survival during the hazardous winter, in the first book, then the betrayal afterwards of the family. I am not sure if it is based on true life, but if you like social history this will be a couple of books for you.

I've only just noticed your comments and can thoroughly endorse them. The Seige stayed with me for ages after I read it.And recently I found a dramatization of The Betrayal on BBC Sounds.Very sadly Helen Dunmore died fairly recently. She remains one of my favourite authors.

Try The Bronze Horsemen Trilogy by Paulina Simon's, also about the siege of Leningrad. Brilliant stories, I was quite sad to finish them.
Helen Dunmore was a wonderful author, I have read most of her books.
