Life is rather difficult for me at the moment and I like to 'escape' through reading. I don't want to read sad or depressing books as they only make me feel sad and depressed, so can anyone recommend funny books that would keep me cheerful? I like Jenny Eclair's books but I've read all hers and I also enjoyed the Jeeves books but I think I've read all those, too. Other funny books I've enjoyed in the past are Cold Comfort Farm and Diary of a Nobody also Sue Townsend and Nina Stibbe's books, but again I've now read them all. Any ideas, please?

These things are always very subjective, but I’ve always found Three Men In A Boat and Cold Comfort Farm very funny.

I know it’s not the sort of thing you’re looking for, but the other day I dug out Raymond Briggs’ ‘Father Christmas’ - the cartoon version of a grumpy old FC.

Someone gave it to a dd when she was only 2 - far too young, and IMO it’s decidedly wasted on young children anyway, but I laughed so much (Blooming chimneys! Blooming cats! X@#@x weather!) my mother said, ‘At this rate you’ll set your baby off’ - I was heavily pregnant at the time.

"This is going to hurt" by Adam Kay is hilarious. It's not a novel though. But observations of a hospital doctor.

I see Suedomin has already suggested Three Men in a Boat, it made me laugh out loud.

I've just remembered the series of books by Gervase Phinn. He wrote about his time as a Schools Inspector in the Yorkshire Dales. Very readable and funny.

I was trying to remember a book I read years ago which was turned into a TV series with Geraldine James

Tom Sharpe - “Blott on the Landscape” with a magical David Suchet as Blott

That's who I was thinking of, the Tom Sharpe, Blott on the Landscape! Thanks GrandMattie

Just about all of Alexander McCall Smith's books are light and cheerful. The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency is light and amusing. Yes, very good

I know it’’s old hat, but I enjoyed the James Herriot books enormously - the humour came across much more than in the series based on his writings.

The Moon's A Balloon, by David Niven. A very old book, but extremely funny. I laughed out loud most of the way through. Definitely the funniest book I have read. When I read it we were on holiday. I spoke about how funny it was at breakfast in the hotel and the man in the bedroom next to ours responded that he knew it was funny because he could hear me laughing. Oops!

Darling Buds of May H.H. Bates - much nicer and funnier than the TV series.

Mapp and Lucia E.F. Benson- a delicious study in snobbery, very funny.

The One Plus One by Jo Jo Moyes. I've read it at least three times .It makes me laugh out loud but also shed a tear.It was the first time I'd read the last page and then turned to the start and read it all again.

Another fan here of Bill Bryson' s books - the funniest is 'The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid' the chapter where his neighbour dives into the local lake had me crying and screaming with laughter ???

Anything by Tom Sharpe. The funniest laugh out loud books ever. ?

The tent, the bucket and me. Absolutely hilarious.

The only books that made me laugh out loud many times were the Reggie Perrin books by David Nobbs.

Jane Gardem’s books especially the “Old F.I.L.T.H”series.
Mary Wesley, if you can get them. I especially love “the vacillation of Poppy Carew” and her first book “Jumping the queue”.

I love all Marion Keyes books she is so funny in all her books but the ones about the Walsh family especially.

Eat Cake by Jeanne Ray - I read this a long time ago, but remember it as funny.

The School of Essential Ingredients by Erica Bauermeister. Each chapter is a veiwpoint of a differnt person that enrolls in a cooking class. It comes together at the end with a celebratory dinner.

X post re Bill Bryson

I still have a giggle about some of Bill Bryson's observations although it's years since I read his books.
Time for a re-read I think.

Calistemon Mon 08-Nov-21 23:37:33

I enjoyed all of Bill Bryson's books apart from A Walk in the Woods (although others might like that one).

The Stephanie Plum books by Janet Evanovich are also funny as well as being detective stories.

Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K Jerome. Old but with gentle humour and a fabulous dog!

It’s non-fiction but One More Croissant For The Road by Felicity Cloake had me laughing out loud. She’s a food writer who decided to do a tour de France by bike (not THE Tour de France grin) visiting places renowned for their food. Very funny.

Bill Bryson’s books are also amusing.

Thanks, Peasblossom. I've made a note of those.

Have you tried Johan Johansson. “The adventures of the one hundred year old man who climbed out of a window and disappeared.” (Or something very close to that)

It’s quirky, but I laughed and laughed.

If you like Cold Comfort Farm you might like Dodie Smith, “I Capture the Castle”
