Well, I must have my head in the sand because, despite all the hype, I've never heard of it.

Off to investigate!

On my morning walk around the village today, I saw a copy on a gate post to give away, but I didn't pick it up. I don't think it would be my thing.

I enjoyed it. I listened on audiobook. I gave it as a gift to someone, so must have found it good enough.

I was given it for Christmas and couldn’t get on with it. I gave it to my DIL and she loved it.

If you are reading it for the story then maybe not so good but if you are reading it for views on the publishing industry, fame, and racism then it is a good read.

I loved it, it got me out of a reading slump.

I listen to it on bbc sounds . I loved it, very “thought provoking”

Funnily enough DH brought me “ Yellow Face” quite a while back .
I always have a pile of books to read so it’s still sat there .
It didn’t immediately appeal to me , reading the comments on this post makes me want to give it a go for better or worse !
However, I did see a few weeks ago it was in the Sunday Times top 10 or 20 list !!

Started it but gave up. Badly written and wasn’t gripped by the story. It’s been over-hyped.

Well I read it to the end. It was a bit depressing and certainly not life enhancing.

Thank you. Yes OK suits it so far but the momentum seems to be lacking. I may do what I sometimes do and that is leap through it in case the ending is any good.

I bought it a while back in the supermarket because the cover blurb sounded good. Haven't read it yet - I will do at some point but if I book bores me I can't force myself to finish it.

I've just been given it. Think I'll pass it on.

I casually picked it up in Waterstones, just to read a bit about it, when I was practically leapt on by a very enthusiastic staff member who assured me it would be the best book I would read that year.
It wasn’t true.

Yes I thought it was very silly. The font was far too small as well!

Cabowich Fri 15-Nov-24 17:12:46

Yes, it was just OK, not worthy of the hype.

It was real in some respects - the jealousy experienced amongst creative types, or in any work area, really.

But the plot was a bit OTT and not really believable.

Fairislecable

It’s also available to listen to on BBC sounds:

I listened to it when it first came out. My judgment was ‘ok’, but probably would have bothered if I’d been reading it.

Mollygo Fri 15-Nov-24 12:35:39

It’s in my DNF list.

I give a book 50 pages (sometimes less) ... if I'm not enjoying it, I abandon it. Life's too short and there are too many terrific books out there just waiting to be read.

Often books that are over-hyped are a complete disappointment ... to me anyway.

TerriBull Fri 15-Nov-24 12:09:43

I nearly mentioned Butter Fairislecable, recommended to me by step-granddaughter with a "you'll love it" er No! found it pretty tedious.

Fairislecable Fri 15-Nov-24 11:58:25

I read it last year with my book club and the general consensus was “ it’s OK”.

The basic idea was good but quite a bit was just not believable and the storyline was carried to extreme. For us it did give a good discussion on the morals and rights.

We also read Butter and quite a few of us gave up on that one - despite the hype and promotion.

TerriBull Fri 15-Nov-24 11:33:29

Yes I read it when it first came out, I thought it was quite good at the time, but can't remember why now. I think I posted a review on 50 books thread. Fellow poster, we often agree about certain books, said she hated it. So there you are. Bin it if you are finding it a trial, life's too short and it probably won't get any better. How I wish I took my own advicegrin I do think over hyped books are sometimes destined to disappoint.

It's my book club choice for January and I've got it on hold at the library. Clearly lots of other people took notice of the hype as it's telling me I've probably got to wait 10 weeks for it!

I was going to buy it but I'm not so sure now

Lovetopaint037 Fri 15-Nov-24 10:46:51

Half way through and not gripped. Wondering if once more Itook notice of the hype and bought it. Perhaps it will improve.
