Bookmarks.

I cut up all cards - birthday, Christmas, Mothering Sunday (coming up!) and keep a stash in every room. Some have chopped up messages on the back - adds to the fun. Train tickets etc get lost while the book is in use.
My DH dog-ears too.

I use postcards I have bought from places we have visited over the years.

As I mostly read library books I put the date the books are due back on the blank side so that I am reminded, or can easily check, when the books are due to be returned.

Plus of course, it's lovely to look at the picture on the front and reminisce as sometimes the postcards are quite a few years old.

Our teenaged granddaughter recently taught herself how to crochet on Utube and has made us each a lovely bookmark. DH’s is green and mine is pink. Both have a crocheted flower attached.

I do have proper card bookmarks usually funny dogs or cats or advertising ones I collect along the way. most the time though its postcard till receipts the library slip saying when it has to be back, anything to hand really. but I would never bend back the corners

I have four. One my daughter bought which tells me to never scratch my head with a cheese grater. One from a favourite beach, an embroidered one I made and a crossstitch one with my dads initials that I made for him one Christmas.

I have a variety of bookmarks. I have some Persephone book marks, as Indigo mentions, and a variety of postcards. One is an Anne Geddes pc of babies dressed as bees. My friend’s dd sent it to me when she went to university - she turns 45yo next month.

A friend once lent a book to her next door neighbour. He read it and gave it back to her with the comment that he’d looked after the bookmark in it. When she opened the book, she found that she’d used a (new!) panty liner to mark the page! 😂

I use a train ticket, not the same one all the time, they get damaged, I use the most recent one. When on holiday I keep my bus or train ticket and use that one.

I’m a bookworm with a variety of bookmarks. My two favourite are a magnetic clip type, so secure, with an arrow on the page I’m reading and an old friend’s clever gift, a corner of an envelope, cut off, the right size and a photo of one of my favourite authors stuck on to it. He made quite a few for me.

I’ve gone off loose bookmarks as the two above mean I never lose my place.
(Had a friend who used to put his (hard) contact lens in his book to mark the page😳

I love bookmarks and have quite a few. My two favourites are one made for me by a member of my book club which seems like sea and sky with a small bird flying. The other is wooden with my name and a beautiful outline of a daffodil scorched into the wood given to me by a dear friend who is Welsh.

When DD1 and her DH had a trip on the Northern Belle (train) she brought back an engraved, silver bookmark. I only use it at home in case I lose it when out and about, or on holiday,

There is a second hand bookshop that has a notice board where all the things used as book marks and left in the books are pinned.
I have a variety of book marks, but often use what’s to hand, cards or till receipts.

I do have a nice and proper bookmark, in the book I'm reading slowly, which st the moment is The Plantagenets, I'm only on Henry 111 so a way to go yet. For my more rapid reads, which tends to be a novel, I pick up any old card that comes through the door, at the moment that relates to drains but I think I'll buy some nice ones from my library--cos I'm worth it-- or at least the books are!

I should have added that if I’m going on the train and am planning to start a new book, I nearly always forget to take a bookmark and end up with my train ticket marking the place. With the increasing move to ‘everything on mobile phone’, I am doomed!

I love these stories of bookmarks - especially those that remind people of children or other family/friends.

NonGrannyMoll and Oreo, I am impressed and inspired by your systems and creativity. I am off to look for a suitably sized box, arty paper and some cards to cut up. My ‘ribbons’ are in a box with plain card cut and hole punch to make labels 😂

I have a collection of Persephone bookmarks as each book comes with with a card bookmark that matches the endpapers.

I usually have at least three books on the go at any one time and I am ashamed to say I am using a nail file for one of the books, almost as bad as dog earring. I have heard of people using a jam sandwich as a bookmark.

I make my own, I save pretty birthday cards and cut out a rectangle, snip off each corner then hole punch at the top and knot thin ribbons through it.Even the ribbons are free as I cut out all the shoulder ribbons from any jumper or top or dress I buy and keep them in a box.

I have one which was ‘embroidered’ by one of my daughters when in Primary school.. She gave it to me with such a proud smile on her face, bless her. I don’t think she has sewn anything since, and she’s 56 now! 😂

I try to buy a bookmark whenever I go abroad. They make nice souvenirs and I do actually use them.
I once left my Lake Garda one inside a library book and was amazed when the library phoned to tell me. I had simply written my name on it.

Am I the only one (surely not) who collects bookmarks (and actually uses them all)? Not concurrently, of course (I don't read that many books at one time!). I made a little box, covered with arty wrapping paper, in which I stand all my bookmarks (there are probably about 60 by now). As I finish a book, I put the bookmark I've used at the back of the box, taking the one at the front for my next book. They all make their way back round eventually.
In answer to your question, Calendargirl, I use all kinds of markers - library opening times, bookshop freebies, picture cards from art galleries, local festival advertising cards, etc. If I receive a particularly nice greetings card, I'll chop the front of it down to an oblong. I can't bear to be without a bookmark (just in case) so I carry a couple in my handbag....
