Oops set in Victorian times.

Edward Marston has several series, including the Railway Detective ones (Victorian) and the Home Front ones (set in the First World War). I have read quite a few of both, and also some of his other books set in the 11th century, the early 19th century and the twenties (thirties?). As you might expect, they have similarities, but I have enjoyed the Railway Detective ones for their setting of the railways and for the story of the characters as it progresses through the series. The Home Front ones are about London policemen during WWI, and again, the characters' stories progress while the crimes are being investigated.

They are not great literature, I'm sure, but they are a pleasant read. Edward Marston is married to Judith Cutler, whose books I also enjoy.

I've just finished an Elizabeth Jane Howard and unfortunately will not be able to pass it on to my dil. One of the main characters lives with her widowed brother thus stopping any chance of getting a job or marrying. Most of the men are waiting for an inheritance or swanning off to the south of France without any mea s of support.
My dil has already rejected Paul Scott as she didn't like the way Indians were treated.
