I listened to a Clare Balding podcast last night in which she interviewed the author of Skellig. I’ve been reading a lot of children’s literature recently but this is a book I’ve never heard of. Wikipedia said it was on the same level as Tom’s Midnight Garden ( my all time favourite) and Northern Lights. The storyline sounds a bit creepy and sad though. I wondered if anyone had read it. My granddaughter is an avid reader and I’d hate to recommend a book that might be a bit disturbing.

I remember reading it years ago when my daughter was reading it too. I can't quite remember how old she would be at the time, but she was definitely still at primary school. I didn't find it all that creepy or sad, but I've always loved the darker side of things anyway, even as a child. It certainly didn't bother my daughter at all. She loved it.

Oh it's a lovely book- quite magical and sensitive really. I read it with my classes a few years ago-they loved it and so did I. A real classic.

My children read this.
I think it's got quite a few funny bits as well as the fantasy, the sick sister, etc.

Not loved as much as Alan Garner (whose works my adult children were actually chatting about only yesterday!) - but great story - which I think has won awards.
