When do you read?

As in, what time of day, or when you are doing other things?

I used to read a lot. I always had a book on the go - sometimes two - but these days I struggle to finish one. I read poetry (but even then, not as much as I used to), but can’t seem to concentrate on a novel. I’ve tried audiobooks, but my mind wanders when I listen, and I often find the narrators irritating.

I used to read on the bus on my way to work and back, but I don’t do that anymore, so I lost both the routine and the 90 mins or so a day. I’m not a fan of reading in bed, but maybe I should start forcing myself to make that a routine.

I know I would enjoy it if I could get back into the swing of it. I miss reading.

Has anyone else ever lost their reading mojo, and if so, how did you get it back, please? Or for those who do read regularly, when do you do it?

Usually in bed before I go to sleep but also in the day when I can . On the days I don’t work with my lunch . Read a lot more on holiday. Can’t stand audio books has to be the real thing. Also subscribe to a weekly and monthly magazine .

I’m new here, so thought I’d say hi and join this discussion.

I absolutely love reading, and read every night in bed for around an hour. I use my kindle because I find holding physical books quite difficult these days because of arthritis in the hands, but love to own physical books too.

I can’t even imagine my life without something to read.

It turns out it's easy to organise on the computer. You can delete too (which I don't think used to be possible), and even move books from one Kindle to another.

I've got rid of a few duds, and will organise the others at some point. I still have more than 400 on there - it's amazing how all the free and 99p ones add up, plus the ones I've bought over the last century or so grin.

I have a few thrillers/detective stories on there, and I enjoy that sort of thing, so will start with one of those I think. Thank you all for your suggestions and contributions.

I'm retired and one of the joys of that is if it's rainy & I have a quiet day, I can walk the dog & then come back & curl up with a book.

It is my best way of de-stressing so often if I have a problematic DIY job on the go (& most are problematic for me), I'll do some & then reward myself with a chapter of a book, then do a bit more.

& I read before going to sleep unless I'm exhausted.

After a sudden bereavement I did lose my reading mojo, couldn't concentrate, but happily it soon returned.

I don't work anymore so I read whenever I feel like it. A few pages during meal times, listening to audiobooks while doing housework, before bed - or I just sit down for half an hour any time of the day, really. I never had a reading routine, but like you, I used to read a lot during work commute. I usually have more than one book on the go, say, one fiction, one non fiction, one audiobook, and I pick up the one that fits my mood and concentration level the best. If a book doesn't keep me engaged, I won't finish it.

I read in bed every night and if it's weather for sitting outside, I read then too but that's the only time I read during the day.

As a lifelong avid reader I still read in bed every night.
Anything from half an hour to an hour, or sometimes more if
the book is brilliant.
And I often have a read at lunchtime, when I finish my chores and sit down to have a sandwich or something.
In nice weather I sometimes take a picnic and a book to the moors, or to a beach, and sit reading in my car, after a walk.
I can't exist happily without reading. And it's mostly a mix of library books and my Kindle.

I have zero guilt about doing whatever I want to do, so it's not that in my case grin.

I like the idea of returning to a favourite book. There are so many on Kindle that I need to have a good look and see what I have. The new one arrived set up and ready synched, which was great - it was even connected to the wifi.

Is there a way of deleting ones you don't want on there? It could do with being thinned out.

I believe you can organise them into folders - I did that with my very first keyboard one ages ago, but haven't since. I'll look online later to see how to do it. With luck, finding ones I'd forgotten were there will inspire me. I might set up a 'to read now' folder, or is that procrastination? wink

The only reading I do lately is to my two small grandsons.

I was always an avid reader but have lost the ability to concentrate, sadly. I waste far too much time scrolling through the internet.

I have kept a Barbara Pym on the kitchen table for months past. I can escape into her funny-sad world of well -observed characters. I also have a Gaelic phrase and vocabulary book on the table at present: this is easy for a brief read at odd times for instance while something is cooking.

Calendargirl Wed 01-Apr-26 10:52:55

I use my local library a lot, I returned two books this morning and collected another three I had ordered.

I read in the evenings if there is nothing I want to watch on tv.

I read a bit in bed before going to sleep.

I read in the late afternoons as a treat if I’ve got my jobs done!

I sometimes read whilst eating my frugal lunch.

In short, I love reading, and could happily spend more time on it than I do, but still feel a bit guilty as though I should be doing something more important and less self indulgent.

Caleo Wed 01-Apr-26 10:48:59

Years ago, I used to read in bed----then I abruptly stopped. I can't remember why.

Now I keep a book or two on the kitchen table and read it while I am eating my solitary meals, or during the night hours until my dog decides he has enough time out in the garden.

twiglet77 Wed 01-Apr-26 10:42:33

I can never get comfortable to read in bed (hip pain). I settle down in an armchair after lunch and read until the dogs say it’s time to go for a walk!

Dominic Sandbrook has started an interesting podcast called Book Club. He is doing The Secret History this week.

JaneJudge Wed 01-Apr-26 09:37:10

I read when I am off work. Occasionally I might be able to start/finish a book in the week - when at work but I have to make an effort. I blame social media and reading 'in general' on line. I suppose before we would be limited to a morning paper and after work you would either watch tv/the news and read/catch up with chores/hobbies. Now we have access on line to all sorts o stuff we most probably don;t want to actually read about or get involved in but it consumes us

Greyduster Wed 01-Apr-26 09:33:51

I suppose it depends on what I am reading. If it’s a book that I quite literally cannot put down, I don’t confine myself to any particular period to read it. I have just downloaded a book onto my iPad that I know I won’t be able to leave alone. I wish I could read in bed but I can’t. When I wake up in the middle of the night which happens often, it would be useful!. I have been an avid reader all my life. I still prefer a physical book rather than a digital reader. Looking around my living room now, there are stacks of books everywhere - must do something about that before they have to dig me out!!

Maggiemaybe Wed 01-Apr-26 09:11:54

I always have three books on the go - a proper one for bedtime, bathtime and journeys, one on my Kindle in case I wake up in the night, and an audiobook for when I’m walking into town etc or doing housework. We don’t have a local library now, but the service does at least give us a good selection of digital downloads, and I always have a stack of real books from charity shops, stalls at local fairs etc. I don’t tend to sit and read books during the day unless we’re on holiday, but we still get weekend newspapers with all the supplements that seem to last all week. smile

^Apparently someone who reads in bed is a Librocubicularist^

Good grief, I never knew!

What a chat up line that could be
I'm rather into librocubicular these days dahlingwink

TheWeirdoAgain60 Wed 01-Apr-26 09:08:56

I'm 60, and as a 5-year-old, I clearly remember always having my nose in a book!

People would say ''You need to go out and play! You need to make friends! You need...''

No! I only want books and animals! I had a book in my school bag and would read in the playground during breaks.

Then, as a teen with my first job, again, books always in my bag, I could read in breaktimes and now as an adult!

Also, at home after work and any other time I can! But only ever physical books, I can't abide any of the computerised things!

GrannyGravy13 Wed 01-Apr-26 09:00:57

If I feel I am losing my reading mojo I go back and reread a favourite book, this usually works.

I read my kindle in bed, last thing and first thing. I find I like quite surroundings to really get absorbed nowadays, I even get distracted by the radio.

In the summer I love to read on my lounger in the garden, in the winter I curl up on the sofa facing the garden, with a favourite blankie , hot drink and hopefully get totally absorbed into my current book 📚📚📚

Patsy70 Wed 01-Apr-26 09:00:46

I always read books in bed, on my Kindle - when I go to bed, when I wake during the night and before I get up in the morning. I read on train journeys, plane flights, and in waiting rooms. I just love to read! 📖

Aveline Wed 01-Apr-26 08:44:14

I learned to read very early at the no nonsense nursery I attended. However, I loved it and read whenever I could. Unfortunately, I was always told by my mother to stop reading and go out and play. When I had my own children I tried to make them stay in and read but no luck. Oppositional behaviour!

shysal Wed 01-Apr-26 08:18:43

I have RA, so a morning soak in the bath sets me up for the day. This is the only time I read except the odd occasion when sitting outside. For some reason I feel guilty if I read during the day. Crazy I know! I am retired and live alone so can please myself.
A local village has a book swap bus shelter so I am never short of reading matter.

Chocolatelovinggran Wed 01-Apr-26 07:55:29

I'm with those who read everywhere. I can't sleep until I've read, I take a book on buses and trains, read with meals, etc. I like a physical book, but some members of my book group use a kindle, which can be useful to those who prefer a larger print.
Screen scrolling can be addictive, but for me, it's junk food compared to a book, which is a satisfying meal...

SpinDriftCoastal Wed 01-Apr-26 07:12:48

I read in bed especially in Winter. I have a hot water bottle, lots of pillows and make sure I'm warm enough. However, a book that pulls me into the story is essential these days otherwise I just ditch it. I also like books with fairly short chapters. I've always got a book by the bedside and generally read for half an hour before settling down for the night.

Same here!
