When do you read?

As in, what time of day, or when you are doing other things?

I used to read a lot. I always had a book on the go - sometimes two - but these days I struggle to finish one. I read poetry (but even then, not as much as I used to), but can’t seem to concentrate on a novel. I’ve tried audiobooks, but my mind wanders when I listen, and I often find the narrators irritating.

I used to read on the bus on my way to work and back, but I don’t do that anymore, so I lost both the routine and the 90 mins or so a day. I’m not a fan of reading in bed, but maybe I should start forcing myself to make that a routine.

I know I would enjoy it if I could get back into the swing of it. I miss reading.

Has anyone else ever lost their reading mojo, and if so, how did you get it back, please? Or for those who do read regularly, when do you do it?

I read every morning in the bath with a cup of coffee. It's my treat. And as I volunteer at a library I'm reading more now than I've ever done
I used to read in bed at night but increasingly found it hard to stay awake and concentrate. So mornings work best for me.Plus the odd afternoon if I have a quiet day which isn't too often.

I read every chance I get especially when other half is monopolising the tv in the evening! Kindle books are my favourites, latest are The Belle Fields and sequel Ashes of Roses by Lora Adams and Brother to the Ox written a long times ago by Fred Kitchen. I also enjoy poetry and found Say Kangaroo by Five Sisters really was unique and I readily travelled back to my childhood! I certainly escape life's probs when 'page turning'!😀

I read every night in bed before I go to sleep.

Currently reading The Other Bennett Sister on my new colour Kindle.

I love reading, enjoy Mysteries, Thrillers, Horror. But recently found that some books have very small print and as I am not as young as used to be I find it difficult reading these in the evening. I mainly read at night before settling down to bed. I sometimes read in the afternoon if nothing much good on TV and my husband enjoys his programmes so I can indulge in my book. I Have a list of favourite authors, but also get swayed to others at times, when browsing Amazon.

I wish I could listen to audio books. I just can’t concentrate on them. And getting the right narrators voice can be crucial too. Since scrolling I’ve lost the ability to read. Sad.

Sorry you’ve lost your reading mojo Doodledog. I did when Mum died, maybe because I associated it with the long drives to be with her or the hours sitting by her bed, just holding her hand while she slept.
I started again just rereading old favourites. Three I remember The Plague and I by Betty MacDonald and Morning Glory by LaVyrle Spencer then endless Jonathan Kellerman books seemed to get me reading again.
On the way to work, I read my Kindle now I’m using the bus. It’s amazing how many students are reading on the way to or from uni-mostly real books.
Other times? At breakfast, or lunch if I’m on my own. Definitely at bedtime. A new book is great, but if not, rereading a familiar book is as good as a sleeping tablet.
I like audio books and I still listen to them on long journeys or when I’m walking the dog or doing housework.
Hope you start enjoying reading again.

A joy of retirement is being able to slot reading into daytime not just last thing at night.
My favourite time is sitting in the sun with prescription sunglasses on l, diving into my current read.

Yes, I stopped reading for pleasure when I did a lot of reading and writing large documents at work. I started again after leaving that job. I also stopped reading after developing cataracts, and after getting them removed it took a couple of years to get back into it - I did craft stuff instead. I have now got back to reading again, I have a kindle which means I can enlarge the print and alter the brightness, which really helps.

Doodledog - Try joining a small book club locally where you agree on a book for each session and when you meet discuss it as well as maybe have a glass of wine and some nibbles. That way you will have a target to reach - to read and digest the book in time for the book club and then you'll be forced to read at all times available in order to finish it in time. And you'll come to recognise whether you enjoy reading in certain places and/or at certain times of the day.

Personally, I don't get time to read every day as I don't enjoy reading in bed but I do enjoy setting time aside in a comfy armchair before I go to bed if I'm not too tired.

I have been in several book clubs. I used to read all the time, but recently have lost the desire to do it. I left the club I'd been in for over 20 years as I found the pressure of needing to read something chosen by someone else was putting me off even more. I might join again if I think I'll enjoy it, and another group I'm in has a book club, too.

I now have my shiny new kindle, and since I got it I have been reading a lot more. I have nearly finished a book since I started this thread, and am currently sorting the numerous books on the kindle into some sort of reading order.

I read myself to sleep every night and often during the night. I have a Kindle Fire which is actually a small tablet and I now use nothing else apart from my iphone. The Kindle app is on my iphone and both are synced. (sp). Having Amazon Prime entitles me to free Prime. I read at least two books per week books and haven't paid for a book since taking out Amazon Prime some 6 years ago.

i read every day and have always loved reading. I read in bed and I read at other times in the day. I read ficiton and also books on subjects I am interested in like psychology. I have a kindle and use it a lot but prefer a paper book and I think paper books engage our minds more fully. I would be lost without reading! And I am writing a book myself .........am on to the final edit. Maybe I'll post when I have finished? It is psychology for general readers and has a core idea validated by a very senior academic and a psychotherapist and others. I believe it would work well for people who want to understand themselves better and make changes to let go painful repeating patterns. I will look for an agent when i finish my final edi! Nothing ventured , nothing win!

I read any chance that I get. Always in bed, sometimes for a couple of hours before turning off the light, and sometimes for a while when I wake up during the night.
I love sci if and fantasy but do my homework first so it’s very rarely that I read a book that I don’t enjoy.
I generally read on the Kindle app on my iPad, but have it on my phone too so can pick it up anywhere. I tend to use my actual kindle when I’m away.
I also subscribe to New Scientist so always have something exciting and non fiction to read too.

I audiobook now and get through tons and tons of books . I love it as I can listen while travelling or pottering about doing work. Plus my eyes get tired with a print book. I’ve opened my horizons and try different genres . Keeps it all fresh .

Everywhere, any time.
To me, reading is as necessary as breathing!
I do put my book down if anyone comes, naturally.

I read at night in bed every evening. I read in the garden when it's warm enough, or in parks if I'm out. I read on holiday, while travelling and relaxing from sightseeing. I'm never without a book in tow.

I mainly read at night these days. It helps me fall asleep. I do read on a long train journey, beside the swimming pool on holiday and things like that but those occasions are few and far between.

My flat has quite a few book cases stacked library style with gardening in one and music in another etc etc.

Madeleine this made me smile as it reminded me of a local charity shop where the books are carefully arranged. They have chosen to do so by the spine colour, so the bookshelves look like a rainbow! Very cheering unless you’re in a hurry!

I read in bed every night. Trying to sleep without reading would seem strange. I’ve read a lot since my dad took me to join the library when I was seven. Children weren’t allowed to join before that age. We had very few books in the house. On the day I joined, I read my one book ( all that was allowed at that age ), whenever I got home. When I finished, I was allowed to go back to the library on my own to get another one, but was told that borrowing a second one wasn’t allowed on the same day! What a disappointment. I must have been the library’s most frequent borrower after that. I was an only child, and as my parents both worked, I spent a lot of time on my own after school and in the holidays, mostly reading. I don’t read so much during the day nowadays, but always before I sleep, and like so many others, during the night! Mostly actual books, though sometimes on my iPad when a friend forwards me a book. I do crosswords, code words and Wordle daily, and if a book is particularly good, will have it in the kitchen to read at mealtimes.

First thing in the morning to allow my body to catch up with being awake

I also lost my passion for reading and lacked the concentration. I am slowling getting back to be being a reader again. My remedy was reading a lot of short stories - eg. by Penelope Lively and Kate Atkinson. Audio books are no help as I like to see the written word on the page.

WelshPoppy Fri 03-Apr-26 15:19:01

In bed before going to sleep. Has to be a real book though, no Kindle or similar.
