Home care package for 92 year old father

I am trying to organise a big package of care at home for my Dad who is being badly cared for in a residential home following fracturing his pelvis.

Organising these was my job for many years - but things have changed!!

I am finding it almost impossible to find an agency that can provide this care - the only one that has the capacity has a slightly dubious CQC inspection report in terms of recruitment practices and continuity of care. However the carers were rated as "kind and respectful" so that is good.

The only other option that has come up is an individual who provides paid care and whose client has recently died. She comes highly recommended by a local District Nurse. Does anyone know whether paid home carers are obliged to register? - I cannot find this info on the net. And would my father then be obliged to take on the role of employer in the sense of having to organise NI etc.?

In my day we would help people set up care even if they were self-funding - but that was the good old days! No such blooming luck now!!

I have been documenting things - the complication of course is that he has now been nin 3 different hospitals and they are different health authorities!

He is having his op today and I am busy arranging live-in care at home for whenever I can get it (likely to be a week or so) and we are planning to just aim to get him out of hospital asap to his own home where he will have one-to-one care. It will cost an arm and a leg, but that's what his savings are for. I will try and get continuing care money and will trigger AA at the appropriate moment.

My lovely in-laws are approaching eighty now and are about to move closer to me smile so that, if it becomes necessary, I can more easily assist with their care in their later years. Reading about the difficulties experienced by so many Gransnetters has already got me on my mettle; it can be devastating when things are not done properly. Mishap I do hope that your dad gets the care and consideration he needs now and that as a result of your actions other people will get a better deal in the future. flowers

No wonder the poor man is confused! Thinking about you and sending you flowers.

merlotgran Sun 24-Mar-13 22:16:32

What a dreadful worry for you, Mishap I really do hope your father copes with the ordeal of surgery after his fall and that the aftercare meets his needs. You must feel so helpless flowers

Mishap Sun 24-Mar-13 22:01:42

He has fractured neck of left femur and they are admitting him to this new hospital for surgery tomorrow. Goodness knows if he is strong enough to survive all this. If he does he will be back into a long recovery period again.

Galen - I think dehydration was a problem at one point (caused by poor care in his rehab bed in a residential home), but one of the hospitals got on top of that. I do not know how careful this last ward was over his hydration - they were not too careful over making sure he did not fall.

I am not surprised that he is muddled - he has now been in hospital 1 twice, hospital 2, rehab bed in a residential home, now in hospital 3.

Galen Sun 24-Mar-13 21:41:28

Is it dehydration?

Mishap Sun 24-Mar-13 21:34:46

And another update.

This afternoon he fell again in the ward and has been shipped off to another hospital on a 999 call, as there are no x-ray facilities where he is. He was sent on his own, so my sister has driven to the hospital to sit with him. They have now been gone about 5 hours and I am awaiting some word. He has a pain in his hip - let us hope against hope that it is not broken.

Sadly he is becoming quite confused, which can no longer be put down to drugs as he is now only on paracetamol; or to infection because as far as we know both the UTI amnd chest infection are cleared. I hope his mental state does not continue to decline.

There's a lot of it about. It's rife in my mother's care home - no visitors - and I heard today that the NNUH, Nowich is baning all visitors due to The Bug. Was it this bad in the days of Matron and disinfectant?

Elegran Sat 23-Mar-13 13:45:52

Don't be too soft on the hospital, Mishap

Galen Sat 23-Mar-13 12:58:41

sad

Mishap Sat 23-Mar-13 12:53:08

Latest - Dad has recovered from his chest infection and now has a D&V bug that is doing the rounds on the ward. He does not seem too bad at this stage so we have our fingers crossed that all will be well. He is a tough old bird - just as well!

I do not really blame the hospital for this - it is so hard to prevent such a bug spreading in that setting once someone has introduced it.

We were planning to try and get him home for Tuesday week, then this happened, so we wait and see.

Me too! angry For you and your father. flowers

Orca Tue 19-Mar-13 19:23:08

When the time is right? I'm with Galen"

Mishap Tue 19-Mar-13 19:09:47

He's back at the hospital now - they did send a nurse with him to the x-ray dept at the other hospital. He probably enjoyed a bit of company for the first time in ages! Thankfully he has no obvious fractures, although consultant radiologist will look at it tomorrow.

Mishap Tue 19-Mar-13 17:31:20

I have documented it all for use when the time is right.

As far as "on the ground" right now, my sister is very much on the case - I suspect that they groan when she walks in the door. It is not right that she has to maintain this level of vigilance; nor good for her as she already has enough stress in her life.

My brother is down there at the moment and I hope he will kick some a**e.

wisewoman Tue 19-Mar-13 16:17:48

Mishap I am boiling with anger on your behalf - and on your dad's behalf. I know it doesn't help but am thinking about you. As I have said before as your sister in the one nearby and is able to do the running about, can you be the one who documents every single thing that has and is happening and complain vigorously. Division of labour. I am sure the Trusts are all terrified of being splashed all over the papers like mid staffs. Write to the "high heid yins" with chapter and verse. You must be emotionally exhausted. I feel like crying and he is not my dad!
