Make sure you do stress his needs as it’s not always apparent on the day.

Ask for a copy of the reassessment then check it against the original

Two things - firstly do not take the refusal of CHC funding lying down - there is an appeals process which I used and won in relation to my late OH. Seek advice from www.beaconchc.co.uk

Secondly, you do need to disclose all assets to the LA during the financial assessment. But ONLY those that are his, and not those that are yours - so all your pension and other income/savings are not involved and only half of joint assets. Before I got the CHC funding (posthumously) we were being "helped" by the LA - I declared half our joint funds, and all of his.

It was a bit of a joke really as the contribution they eventually made was a drop in the ocean compared with the real cost, but I was not prepared to compromise on the quality of his care. Indeed I began the process of selling our home to meet the cost, when he died.

But, be clear - your home is safe because you are living in it - unless the amount the LA grants him is too little to cover the costs and you choose (as I did) to use your own savings to top-up - and as I said I went on to start the process of selling the house to meet these costs.

Go to the Age Concern website where they have chapter and verse on funding for care. And please feel free to pm me - I have both professional and personal experience of all this.

there are specialist nurses also solicitors whom you could hire to challenge those decisions, you have to pay but it may be worth it in the long run.
it must be a professional who understands the system, who has experience and success in challenging those decisions.
the whole system is deliberately complex i believe, to deter stressed relatives from querying the procedure.

the local authority must have proof of his care needs and then you will have to fill in a detailed financial assessment form, and the local authority will see if and to what degree they will pay for his care.
may i ask why the chc funding was withdrawn; that is unusual i believe.
is there any avenue to challenge that decision?

This is happening more and more ....the review will conclude that there is no longer a primary health need for example ....needs are now predictable as condition has stabilised and therefore need is now primarily a social care need ..... there's been a big shift to tightening up reviews over the past few years ....always worth an appeal though

We have a different problem. Our very elderly neighbour won't speak to the SW. In fact she ordered her out of the flat. All we can do is wait for a crisis!

I can't offer real advice, but you have a right to know why you are being seen and the scope of the interview. You could start with the care home staff, and if they don't know then call the number on the letter, or ring the number from which you were called. Ask who is coming, what is the purpose of the interview, and what information will you be expected to provide. They should give you enough notice to get this in order, so if the interview is on Monday, you can ask for it to be postponed for a week or so.

Obviously you can't conceal information, but it would be a good idea to understand the system, so maybe call Age UK or the CAB for advice. You will have a right to take someone with you too. Good luck.

I imagine it will be a needs assessment to see how funding will continue....so self funding or whether the local authority will be able to contribute ....and to make sure all benefits are being claimed as per entitlement .
