How old are you?

It has been my experience that most grans are in their 40's or 50's these days.....hardly old, so what's with the logo?

The logo is quite fun - can see it's supposed to be retro - evokes my parents' generation, not mine. I relate more to the Charlies' Angels one.

I'm early 60s - not a grandmother. Really surprised how young lots of you are as had assumed grandmas were getting older with people marrying later, etc.

I've been wondering why there are so few threads and posts on Gransnet on my favourite Style and Beauty area - but I guess that, like me, whatever your age you use the excellent Mumsnet one if your interests run that way.

i like the logo it shows that we are for anything. i am 53 i have 3 grandson 5 (step) grandaughters and a great grandson. i am in a wheelchair and the boys think it is great as they say i have my own wheels to race them on their bikes

You lucky lot being young grandmas! Have just got my first and I'm not far off 62. My MIL, the only one of our parents still alive, has become a great grandma for the first time at 90. We both feel we've been waiting a long time! Just hope that I hold up physically (and mentally!) so that I can have fun with my grandaughter + some more grandchildren in the future I hope!

I will be 78 next month, have two children, 5 grand children and two great grand children.Due to divorce I dont see my grand children or great grand children. Annie

I am galloping towards 65 (well, maybe not galloping, more "limping" really). I can still kick a football around and have cushion fights with my 4 year old grandson (he says I'm a bit rough!). I think the logo reminds me of those soviet communist propaganda posters of female workers marching for the motherland, or whatever it is they are supposed to have done. Could do with something with a bit more pizzazz!

janthea Tue 17-May-11 12:38:51

I'm 65, still working and plan to for another couple of years. I feel the same as I felt when I was in my thirties. I have two grandsons (4 and 2) and one granddaughter (2) who will have a brother or sister at Christmas.

I agree about the logo. It looks old fashioned. The colour on my computer makes it look a maroony colour. Not very pleasant. Again the colour is dated.

gah! choose

Interesting comments about the logo. I remember reading an article about Perry and Croft, the writers of Dad's Army. They said that they purpposely wrote a sitcom about a old-time situation - it was first broadcast in 1968, more than twenty years after the war - because there is nothing so unfashionable as last year's fashion. Shows set in the present tense, like Dallas or The Sweeny, look horribly dated now but historical shows, like Dad's Army or Blackadder, can stand continuous re-runs and gain new followers in the next generation.

So, chose something that is already old-fashioned but has stood the test of time (a classic) or chose something time-specific and become out-of-date in a few years time? Perhaps Gransnet are being cleverer than you think.

For those of you who haven't been to mumsnet, their logo is a take on Charlie's Angels. That is no more relevant to today's young mums than land girls/soviet workers are to today's gannies.grin

I'm a 53 year old separated guy from Sellicks Beach, South Australia.

I remember asking my Grandmother this question (many, many years ago).

Her reply was "I'm as old as my eyes, and a little older than my teeth"

BurgundyGran Mon 16-May-11 12:07:19

I am 61 and have five grandchildren: 10, 7, 15 months and twins of 10 weeks.

What were they thinking of with that logo? Either it represents the Land Army (I was born 4 yrs after WW2 finished) or the Suffragettes.

Grandparents are more modern and even my MIL as Great Grandma at 85 is really with it! With the diverse age range we need and deserve something much better than that. Competition to design new logo perhaps?

58, though feel about 28 !!! (most days) First grandchild on the way, expected late October. Agree logo is surreal, dont know what on earth their rationale was for choosing that.

Suuze Sat 14-May-11 14:18:25

I'm 47 and feel the same as I did when i was 18 - no more sense, same enthusiasm for life - the logo is ridiculous

Swedenana Sat 14-May-11 10:33:57

I completely agree about the logo - I'm sure that the moderators will take note that we'd all like to see something a bit more sassy and classy.

Twinklepickers, I love your quote! grin
A lady never reveals her true age. According to my knickers I'm 10

This lady is 50 outside, 18 inside and dare not even look at the lable in her knickers.

Snowdrop Fri 13-May-11 20:28:08

Oops, typo, or perhaps a Freudian slip. That should read 'how' about, not 'hope' about!

Snowdrop Fri 13-May-11 20:24:04

I'm 56 with a step grand daughter of 13 months and a grand daughter due in July - I just can't wait to meet her smile
I think the banner heading should be changed to something more appropriate for ladies of our age rather than our mothers' age - hope about a photo of George Clooney? wink

SkyesGran Fri 13-May-11 20:03:28

I am a 53 year old gran of one gorgeous granddaughter who will be one on the 30th May. I am afraid I do not like the logo either. My Mother, who will be 85 next week was in the Women's Land Army. That is how she met my Dad. I do think the logo needs to be more colourful and more relevant to the grans of today.

nanapippa Fri 13-May-11 16:51:50

Geekygran, it's not just "old people" that knit. It is quite trendy nowadays........

geekygran Fri 13-May-11 13:36:32

IMO, the logo should be of a stylish woman using a lap-top/computer as that is the one (perhaps only) thing all GN'ers have in common grin

Chrissieq Fri 13-May-11 09:48:56

I see what is being attempted by the logo empowerment etc but doubt its appeal to the wide age range the site hopes to attract. Also I feel the categories and leaders you use employ the usual stereotypes. This site should be a chance to fight back against those and it seems the members are way ahead of the editors in that. That said at least you have provided a platform, so thank you for that.

nanafrancis Fri 13-May-11 09:19:46

My GS asked me how old I was (he was 4 at the time). I began to say six.... and then stopped, wondering if he'd understand 61. He looked at me and said 'you can't be 6, Nana'. I reluctantly agreed with this and he went on to say 'You've had a birthday. so you must be 7 now'.
So as far as he's concerned I'm 7 yrs old which gives me the opportunity to act it! My excuse is that everyone knows that 6 + 1 = 7!

lili Fri 13-May-11 09:15:06

I think the age thing is the problem... we are all people who like pebbles on a beach are all different with some things in common... Age is really just a number, I am almost 61 and sometimes I have lots in common with younger folk and sometimes with older, and sometimes I have nothing at all in common with others of my generation ( The Who lyrics to their 'My Generation' track just came to mind)... I think that the 'generation' division 'thing' which divides us all into 'Stepford' like sameness is the enemy of a richness of difference in all of us whatever age we are.

geekygran Fri 13-May-11 08:51:11

When I first visited the website I saw the forum exclusively for 'knitting' and nearly didn't join Gransnet.

Sorry GN peeps, but that really is aging (apologies to GN'ers who knit).

Surely 'handicrafts' would be better?

NanaTina Thu 12-May-11 18:07:16

I love being a Granparent it is great!

harrigran Thu 12-May-11 00:32:20

They are not landgirls in the logo, look closely and you can see one has a tattoo on her arm, really modern granny. I was a mum at 22 but had to wait until I was 59 to be a granny. Why is this generation so keen to wait until it is nearly too late ?
