No way! My mum has just bought a maxi dress and she's 85!! And looks fab in it. Being 5ft in her stockingfeet she had to have 9ins taken off!

Do you notice I'm using feet and inches!!!

I think the question should be more - Am I too old for a mini!! I love maxi dresses and have a couple. I think they are very flatting for young, not-so-young and not-so-old!

SoNanny - I always use feet and inches, pounds and ounces and any other non decimal thingy I can think of!! My weight is always in stones - can't visualise in kilos or centimetres.

grannymags I think maxi dresses and Per-Una style long skirts: flat over tum and gently flaring/fluting from knee-down to ankle, are amazing and very becoming. For my 70th bithday party, I shall be wearing a beautiful long 'fluted' skirt with neat top [3/4 sleeve] and delicious wedge-heeled shoes. Go for it! smile

Everyone used to wear long skirts and nobody thought anything of it, except perhaps what a nuisance it was when you wanted to ride one of those new-fangled bicycles. Who gives a monkey's what anyone else thinks? If you like it, wear it! wink

You are never too old for a maxi dress, I think they look great on all ages and very flattering, I wish I could say the same about the amount of women of all ages showing too much cleavage, awful.

Anniesammi Tue 14-Jun-11 18:48:25

I think most women feel great in a maxi as long as it's fashionable and flattering. A mini, though - only if you're super-confident and have great legs. Definitely wedges, too - fashionable, stable, add height, and go with trousers as well as maxis.
PS how do I add a smiley to a message?

Littlelegs Tue 14-Jun-11 18:54:32

Go with the maxi they look great and they flatter especially with wedges, the only thing I would not agree with is mini's and really low cut tops smile

I am 63 and I bought a lovely one from Next for a retirement party..then was ill and couldn't go. I really want to wear it..but not sure when as we don't go out due to my husbands illness. I think they are very flattering ( and I ain't no skinny Lizzie !!!)
You go for it..they hide a lot too !!!! grin

Definitely not!

I agree with Janthea, a very short skirt on lady of a certain age, an look so wrong, but an ankle length skirt can look elegant on most, depending how it's worn.

PS I saw a girl who seemed under 20 the other day wearing a maxi, she looked like a bag lady, mainly because of what she was wearig it with!

When I wear a skirt, which is not very often, it's usually a long one. I thought wedges were pieces of cheese, or home-made potato chips! wink. I never wear anything but flat shoes.

Oh yes, a maxi dress can look very elegant. In the summer you can get away with very little underneath, so cool as well as chic.

I put my maxis on in the evening at home - no need for restricting clothing undeerneath and more stylish than lounging around in pyjamas- put your frocks on and enjoy them.

I agree a maxi is both fashionable and appropriate for older ladies. One of my pet fashion peeves is long denim skirts! They are not flattering as they hang straight down whereas a cotton maxi will flow. No matter how fab your legs are a bikini or a mini is for the the younger woman. I'm a bit like baggy I rarely wear a skirt or dresses, I have one pair of court shoes that I drag out and dust off for weddings . The three dresses in my wardrobe have all been bought for a wedding too. I walk a lot so I like to be comfortable.

Oh definitely not too old - I'm 60 this year and have several in my wardrobe. They not look elegant but hid a multitude of sins too!! Enjoy!!

I love the idea of maxi dresses/skirts back again.I'm 71,I wear one now and have happy memories of the first time around. Not just the clothes either but the freedom or so we thought of the time.Happy days.

I think, the maxi dresses has also high value yet. At wedding this fashion is not old for you. Now a days the Traditional Bridal dresses with long shirts are trendy styles. So it's becoming in new styles.

Oopsadaisy12 Sun 11-Mar-18 08:02:52

You are never too old for a long frock! Always looks as though someone has bothered.

OldMeg Sun 11-Mar-18 08:16:10

On the contrary it can be flattering and sylish with a touch of Boho Chic.
