Favourite lines disappearing from shops

I have just posted on another thread that the marmite-flavoured Mini Cheddars that I used to love disappeared from the shops a few years ago with no warning. Has anyone else found favourite items (not just food) suddenly becoming unavailable?

Coffee walnut whips and Terry’s chocolate wafers.

Kraft Cheddar Spread. It was a bright orange colour in a jar and delicious. A really strong flavour. No other cheese spread available now is as good..

Charleygirl - surely gobstoppers were bigger than Maltesers, weren't they? I seem to remember they were nearly as big as table tennis balls and they changed colour as you sucked them. Perhaps that is just me having a senior moment. You could also get aniseed balls but I was not partial to them. Horrible flavour.

You can still get Fray Bentos tinned pies - I sometimes keep a couple in for those days when I’m particularly tired or simply can’t be bothered to cook.
One each, with just frozen peas or green beans - no potatoes needed.
Hardly gourmet fare but for now and then, who cares?

The last time I bought one of those I couldn’t open it. I really like them, too.

As a child, I loved Gob Stoppers. They were too large to fit in my mouth but if made today one would be the size of a Malteser.

Green and Black used to do fantastic dark chocolate with bitter cherries.

HurdyGurdy Fri 17-Jun-22 16:18:20

Oooh, could also have been Callard & Bowser that made butterscotch

I've not seen butterscotch, can't remember the name but they were rectangular and had posh gold wrappers.

Keillers? Not sure of the spelling.

I used to love those. But my recollection is of silver wrappers smile

MiniMoon, what flavour do you want?
I still make chocolate blancmange - quite easy, just cornflour, milk, cocoa powder and sugar. A dd made a 3 pint one recently for a big gathering of dh’s ‘clan’ - chocolate blancmange was a favourite in their house.

Where has Brown & Poulson flavoured cornflour (blancmange) gone?
I sent husband shopping this morning and had it on the list. Apparently it's no longer available. He couldn't find any make of blancmange powders in any of the stores.

The whole Tesco direct website facility.

That was good.

I remember one winter day it got a bit chilly and about 3 pm I ordered a thick jumper on the website and as I had the delivery saver plan for the grocery orders I got free next day delivery for the jumper from Tesco Direct and I had washed it, tumble dried it and put it on within 24 hours of ordering it.

Then it all got closed down and the suggestion made to "pop in" to the local store! hmm

And those blocks of pressed dates that were so useful for cooking. anyone know where/if you can still get them?

Were those the ones in the translucent plastic wrapping with a picture of a statue of a golden lion on the front?

I remember those from the 1950s.

If you live in Australia- lettuces!

Heinz toast toppers !

I didn't recognise many user names at the start of this thread. Do you realise that it is 11, yes eleven years old!
It might be better Beautful to start your own new conversation.
Having said that, I used to love Symintons table creams. They were like blancmange powders but with different flavours. My favourite was maple and walnut.

goose1964 butterscotch sweets are still available. They are still in posh gold wrappers but are half the size? I think I got them from the sweet bins in front of the store at Tesco

1) Lidl - wee onions in balsamic vinegar. They were so tasty, I could eat a whole jar in a oner. None of the staff knew why they’d been discontinued.
2) Tesco - multi flavoured liquorice strings - no demand apparently.
3) M&S - pear yoghurt. I’m not a yoghurt fan, but this was lovely, lots of actual chunks of pear. Again, none of the staff knew why it had been discontinued.

An old friend of mine always emails the store/manufacturer if any of his favourites disappear. He has received several compensatory vouchers over the years. I tried with M&S, didn’t even get a reply.

Oxo flavoured crisps. Blimey this thread is 11 years old!

I have just noticed that. How do posters find them? That has always intrigued me.
Why not start a new one?

I’m sure I’ve seen those Marmite Mini Cheddars recently in Sainsbury’s.
Can anyone remember Clarnico Iced Caramels - pink and white?

grannyrebel7 Thu 16-Jun-22 21:55:52

I used to love the coffee creams in the Roses tin. Why oh why did they discontinue them?

midgey Thu 16-Jun-22 21:50:26

Barley sugar sticks, they were about a foot long, you could suck them into a really sharp point!

Doodledog Thu 16-Jun-22 21:40:50

Years ago, we used to love rosemary focaccia rolls from Presto (before they were Safeway then Morrisons). They made the most delicious chicken sandwiches, which I took to work whenever we'd had chicken for dinner. One day, they just disappeared, and we really missed them.

Guess what I found today in Aldi? They won't be the exact same things, but they are as delicious as I remember them. Everyone should buy them, so they become a best seller and won't get discontinued from there, too grin.

Instant whip! Loved it.
