How many times have you moved house?

Prompted by yogagran's question about how far we have moved from where we grew up, and by LullyDully's reply that she's had 17 homes, I wondered who has moved the most?
Can anyone beat me??
I can remember 10 houses I lived in as a child (might have been more)
Another 2 after I ran away from home aged 17 (whilst still at school)
From the time of getting married up until now, I have had a further 18 homes, and am about to move again.
That's 30 at least!
I can't imagine ever staying anywhere for very long, although I did manage a massive 8 years in the house I bought when I came back from Dubai the first time, with 3 school-aged children and a pending divorce. All my downsizing moves since then (that's 4) have been down to my delightful ex refusing to pay what he was supposed to pay sad

Because I moved around so much as a child, and therefore moved schools frequently, I was determined that when I had children they would have the security of staying put. Unfortunately I married the wrong man!!
My eldest daughter went to 3 primary schools and 3 secondary schools.
My middle daughter went to 3 primary schools and 4 secondary!
My youngest daughter went to 3 primaries but just the one secondary.
Although it did cause them a lot of upset on several occasions, on the whole they all feel they gained coping skills and the ability to adapt easily and to be very sociable, so I guess it wasn't all bad.

Now, the 2 of my daughters who are married both have Australian husbands!! Although they live in the UK at present, the chances of one or both moving to Australia at some time in the future must be quite high.
I guess the nomad gene has been passed on!

9 moves:
Born in Clapham, London. Moved to Wembley, then different house in Wembley, Romford, Village near Sudbury, Suffolk, Village near Colchester, Colchester, Horsham, Blackburn, East London.

Liked Horsham and my present home in East London the most.

Or sorority!
(Sh! Don't tell Frank. He'd insist we have to have a man!)

Galen Wed 03-Apr-13 12:37:37

At this rate we will have our own coteriesmile

Movedalot Wed 03-Apr-13 12:15:07

Not as many as some of you but all have been a long way from the others.

Children gained a lot from the moves and are now very adaptable adults who could settle anywhere should the need arise. I think all the new expereinces made it easier to cope with other new experiences. All have travelled extensively and confidently.

Now we are settled in Malvern and cannot imagine movine anywhere else. Perhaps one day to house and garden will be too much for us and then we will downsize but stay in this lovely town.

I have lived in 23 houses.
5 as a child starting off in England, then moving to Scotland when I was 5.
Then 19, married to a serving officer!! Like NannaAnna, our 3 offspring have the wanderlust and all live abroad.

And Oldgreymare I think.
I lived in Bath for one year in 1987.It's a beautiful city but property expensive .
Very easy to get to Bath by train from my present home

Galen Wed 03-Apr-13 11:43:48

Lia yes Bath is very nice. There are several of us near you. Me Maniac and Barrow to name but three

I suppose I have technically moved house 3 times.
I left home to buy my first house in London with my wife. We then got a better house about 8 years later.
Sadly my wife passed away and I got early retirement.
I then moved back to the house I grew up in and I am sitting in it now.

Grew up in Hampstead and Muswell Hill London as Child, but since have moved 11 times. Presently we now live in Marlborough but will be moving to Bath at end of year, hopefully this will be it as at 50 want to put down some roots!

Does anyone know if Bath is a friendly place?

What a shame, Annika - so disappointing for you. flowers

Annika Thu 08-Mar-12 17:00:49

glass Thanks for your kind thoughts. My DD has just sent me a video of our 17th month GS running around in her local park so that has cheered me up smile
You are right something will turn up sooner or later, at least we have sorted through loads of rubbish that we seem to have collected over the years, so less to do next time we try to move

glassortwo Thu 08-Mar-12 16:34:13

keep forgetting it has changed flowers and of course I am too impatient to preview grin

glassortwo Thu 08-Mar-12 16:32:41

annika I am so sorry it is devastating when you have set your heart on a property and it all just falls down around you like a house of cards. But they do say when one door closes another one opens, you will find something which will tick all the boxes. [thanks]

Annika Thu 08-Mar-12 16:28:09

So sad we will not be moving to the bungalow we had our heart set on, its all fallen through sad

YankeeGran Fri 02-Mar-12 14:46:37

As someone once said to me, "Bloom where you are planted". Good advice wherever you live and however often you move - or don't!

bikergran Fri 02-Mar-12 08:53:16

isnt it strange! where ever we move to, we can "always" get gransnet smile

unless its in the deepest jungle of course and even there im sure with tech, these days we could mange itsmile

Learnergran Fri 02-Mar-12 06:58:30

Hope the move went well NanaAnna and that you will be happy in your new home.
Expecting to be on our way in two or three weeks' time now so also living amongst the bubblewrap - but attic almost clear! Have had 26 years in this house but I'm feeling quite detached from it now; it's a family house and it's time there were children in it again smile

goldengirl Thu 01-Mar-12 15:58:47

Not enough! If we'd moved more often perhaps we shouldn't have accumulated so much clobber grin

This is something I have been thinking about lately. Moved when 5 then again at 11, my Dad was in self build group, then again for parents to move to business at 15, just before I took my exams, then I went to live in London for two years, then married and lived in a caravan for 6 months then back at parents, own house for 6 years then brought a house to renovate and stayed there for 15 years. I left that home and had a spell of moves 4 in two years including sharing with a friend for a while. I have live in present home for 10 years....thats 13 ? shock
The hardest where the moves when young as lost out on long time friends, lucky to find some now.

Annika Tue 28-Feb-12 23:09:06

Was so busy having a moan I forgot to say we have only moved 3 times in nearly 39 years of being married.
We have been here now 35 years so will be a big change for us as we are moving from a big house to a bungalow smile
