How many times have you moved house?

Prompted by yogagran's question about how far we have moved from where we grew up, and by LullyDully's reply that she's had 17 homes, I wondered who has moved the most?
Can anyone beat me??
I can remember 10 houses I lived in as a child (might have been more)
Another 2 after I ran away from home aged 17 (whilst still at school)
From the time of getting married up until now, I have had a further 18 homes, and am about to move again.
That's 30 at least!
I can't imagine ever staying anywhere for very long, although I did manage a massive 8 years in the house I bought when I came back from Dubai the first time, with 3 school-aged children and a pending divorce. All my downsizing moves since then (that's 4) have been down to my delightful ex refusing to pay what he was supposed to pay sad

Because I moved around so much as a child, and therefore moved schools frequently, I was determined that when I had children they would have the security of staying put. Unfortunately I married the wrong man!!
My eldest daughter went to 3 primary schools and 3 secondary schools.
My middle daughter went to 3 primary schools and 4 secondary!
My youngest daughter went to 3 primaries but just the one secondary.
Although it did cause them a lot of upset on several occasions, on the whole they all feel they gained coping skills and the ability to adapt easily and to be very sociable, so I guess it wasn't all bad.

Now, the 2 of my daughters who are married both have Australian husbands!! Although they live in the UK at present, the chances of one or both moving to Australia at some time in the future must be quite high.
I guess the nomad gene has been passed on!

18 times

18 all told, too! But nearly 14 years in this house and I'm not going anywhere! Last house was 12 years. We were really keen not to move the children around once they started school but I couldn't face the upheaval now. Imagine sorting out the lofts and the garage - eek!

tanith Thu 15-Dec-11 09:02:08

its only 6times for me and its all been in roughly the same area.. we've been here 15yrs and really don't want the upheaval if we can avoid it..

When living with my parents we moved twice within the same area, after I married DH we have moved a total of 9 times starting off in a one bedroomed flat that we paid the princely sum of £5.00 per week that seems such a small amount but it was 38 yrs ago and was 25% of our income at the time.We did not buy our own home until 1977 when DS1 was 9mths old then moved to the three bed semi which was the worse buy ever, after we had been in there 18mths DS2 made an appearance so space was important and we moved to a four bed Victorian semi in the same area to keep the DCs at the same schools we stayed there for over 20yrs and I still miss that house to this day but it would be inpractable to live there now what with the cost of heating etc, when we lived abroad we moved 3 times in 10yrs from a 3 bed villa into apartments then when we came home lived with our DD until we moved into this lovely apartment that we live in now,we are hoping to move to a bungalow in the next year or two but because we are so comfortable here we are not pushing the option as yet.So we ended not far from where we started off when we first meet.

3x as a child and 3x in 38 years of marriage and we've been in this house for 31 so I can't imagine how traumatic it would be to move again - all the STUFF I'd have to sort out shock

Hunt Thu 15-Dec-11 09:18:25

5, plus 3 during evacuation. We have been in the present house for 40 years!

susiecb Thu 15-Dec-11 09:27:51

I grew up in South Yorkshire and lived in the same house till I moved away at 17. Then married a soldier and had ten different houses in various parts of the world until DH left the Army and we settled back in South Yorkshire! We have just moved into our twelfth house, having lived in the previous one for thirty years! It was half a mile from where I was born! Full circle! I suppose the present one will see us out! There is a cemetery just down the road from our new house. The first time we drove past it, DH said "Oh, that's handy!"

harrigran Thu 15-Dec-11 12:54:12

Just twice, three times if you count our second home too. I'm a Taurean and we hate change grin

syberia Thu 15-Dec-11 12:59:58

12 in my whole life, not planning on any more smile

Libradi Thu 15-Dec-11 13:18:22

Only four times for me, lived here in the same house since we got married (33 years ago). I don't like change grin.

grannyactivist Thu 15-Dec-11 14:02:01

I've moved house 18 times - and spent longer in my present home than anywhere else. I really don't want to leave the town I'm in now as I'm really settled here and I think it's an absolutely wonderful place to live. It's by the sea in a rural area and I feel blessed to be part of a warm, welcoming and vibrant community.

riclorian Thu 15-Dec-11 15:06:44

Twice as a child and 3 times in my married life ---- all within an 8 mile radius of my present Hampshire home . Boring to some I suppose but not to me !! Incidentally I have traced my family tree ( on my Father's side ) and since 1582 father to son and down have all lived within the same radius and followed the same profession . Is that a record of some kind ?

Jams Thu 15-Dec-11 15:19:38

By the time I was 21, I had lived in 36 different homes, and many of those we stayed in for over three years, so I am not wuite sure how my mother managed it. Since 21 (a period of 27 years), I've had 6, but 3 of those have been in the past six years (private rented when we first moved to Cornwall, for just under 4 years, then temp accommodation for two years, finally moving to this house in June this year). And unless something VERY SPECIAL (such as overlooking the sea) comes up, I intend to stay for a long time. I loathe moving.

nanapug Thu 15-Dec-11 16:07:06

I am at the other end of the scale and have moved very few times. As a consequence I would give anything to go house hunting and move house. Am thoroughly bored with my house and where we live. Need a good chuck out. Think moving house may be the answer!!

harrigran Thu 15-Dec-11 16:49:41

Do what I did nanapug and just reinvent your house. I have changed the look of all my rooms. Swapped ducted hot air system for brushed steel radiators with some tall vertical feature ones.
Removed all wallpaper and returned to neutral walls. My house is so totally different I feel as if I have moved smile

Chris1943 Thu 15-Dec-11 17:47:53

We are busy psyching ourselves up for our first move since 1966 - not looking forward to it at all, and I can guarantee the next time will definitely be in a box.

I was born under a wandering star. So far, I have lived in Salford, Bolton, Preston, Surrey, North Wales, the Wirral, Chester, Monaco, Maidstone, Rainham (Kent), Brussels, Hammersmith, Chelsea, Ash (Kent), St. Margaret's Bay (Dover), Nafferton, (E. Yorks), several different departments of France (Aude, Pyrenees Orientales, the Dordogne, Lot, Haute Garonne), and I am currently very happy in Haute Savoie, but in a few years I will move to New Zealand to join my daughter and her family.
My sister has lived in the same house for 28 years and would be distraught if she had to leave. She has enjoyed visiting me, but does not share my wanderlust.
I travel widely for holidays, too, in search of pristine coral or lovely scenery. I am 'collecting' Islands and have visited seven in the Caribbean and five around Malaysia, four in Greece, the Maldives, Madeira, Jersey, Guernsey, Isle of Man, Anglesey, Skye, Corsica, Majorca, Minorca, and will be in Phuket in four weeks time.
I live close to both the Italian and Swiss borders, so it is easy to have a few days holiday in either country, and when I lived in the Pyrenees I was able to cross into Northern Spain for days out.
I have used some of my homes for house-swapping, which gave me holidays in the Dolomites, the Caribbean, Provence, and Almeria.
When I move to New Zealand, I plan to visit Cambodia, Vietnam, China, Fiji, and many other Pacific Islands.
I did not leave Britain until I was divorced at 39 as my ex-husband was afraid of flying and just wanted to tow his boat to Scotland, Wales or the West Country. All very beautiful, but I longed to see more of the world, so in the last 32 years I have deliberately lived in several different countries and spend all my income, other than the basic cost of living and helping my family, on travel.

Lived in the same house from birth until I married at 22 and have had six moves since then. This last move should have been a down-size - didn't happen hmm.......next time for definite....wink

From being born, we lived with my maternal grandma, as my father had been killed 6 months earlier. Then when I was 3 my mother remarried and we lived in my stepfathers house. Aged nearly 13, I ran off to my paternal grandma in Lancashire, and lived there till I married, aged 20. Then we lived a few doors away from my grandma for 2 and a half years, then moved to the next town into a brand new house, where we lived for nearly 12 years, before moving across the country to Lincolnshire, where we still are, but have had several addresses whilst here. Firstly, we lived, all 7 of us and a cat, in a 12` touring caravan on a campsite for 15 months, then a council house 9 miles out or town for just over 3 years, then after our car was written off by an idiot, we lived with some friends in town until we got another council house just 4 miles from town and on a bus route. We lived there for just over 3 years till we bought our present house, in town, where we`ve been for just over 26 years now. So I make that 10 addresses I`ve had in my lifetime.
