I feel that it's time to come out of the closet about this, but perhaps it might be more accurate to say "come out of the cupboard".

For years I have suffered from an affliction that whilst it is in no way life threatening, can cause distress, confusion and create more washing up.

I refer to "Philpott Syndrome". I feel that there may be many sufferers among us, but we go (as yet) unrecognised and undiagnosed.

The principal symptom is the complete inability to identify the amount of a substance be it liquid or solid, and recognise the size of the container into which it will fit.

How many times have you considered a quantity of cooked mince and onions, destined to become a shepherds pie, and dithered over the selection of a suitably sized pyrex dish to accomodate it, plus the correct proportion of mash?

Have you, too, poured soup or sauce into a tub, ready to go into the freezer, only to find it either overflows the container, or that you have a left over amount that is of of no practical use?

Or even, perhaps, looked at that last bit of wine in the bottle and wrongly thought that it would fit in your glass, only to find yourself reaching for the kitchen roll?

If you can answer "yes" to any of the above, chances are that you too are a sufferer.

Unfortunately there is currently no help available, but by standing together, shoulder to shoulder (allowing of course for the possible lack of judgement over shoulder distance) we can raise awareness of this condition.

Thank you for reading.

It seems that pets benefit from this syndrome, unless you think it cruel to have fat cats.

nonnanna I go by the sun!
No it's one of those things when someone says 'what time is it?' and I say '2.30' and someone looks at their watch as says 'no, you're wrong it's 2.31'

I have today officially diagnosed myself with Philpott Syndrome. At last I can put a name to it and what a relief to find that there are fellow sufferers in the same boat - should that be pot? - as me. I make so much washing up when trying to find the right sized container, especially for shepherds pie and pasta bakes. Try one for size, too small, tip it all out into a larger dish, usually losing some onto the worktop, too big, start again. Thank you to phoenix for raising awareness of this affliction.

Nonu You can't be seriousshockGo to Icelandshock
My trifles are legendary and Granjura's recipe(slightly modified by me) has provided an interesting variation on the traditional family one.
My dad always made the trifle at Christmas and once even went so far as to issue a questionnaire after Christmas tea, a sort of quality assurance thing -

1. amount of sponge cake: too much/too little/just right
2. texture of sponge cake: too rubbery/too soft/just right
3.quantity of sherry: too much/too little/just right
4. Consistency of custard
5. Quantity of ratafias etc etc.

I suffer from a strange disorder which is the opposite of this. For instance tonight I needed to weigh out 100g of cheese. I took the knife, sliced some off the block and it weighted .....exactly 100g. Last month I went out and bought 5 rolls of wallpaper, never thought to measure and the walls took ...exactly 5 rolls. People ask what time it is (I never wear a watch) and I'm always within 5 minutes. Before Christmas I bought a console table on the spur of the moment to fit into an alcove and it fits ...exactly. Today I made gooseberry and chilli relish. I sterilised 6 jars and I filled all 6...exactly. I do this all the time, I don't know how, it just happens. It's magic I think.

Jane would it not have been easier to go to Iceland and buy ready made trifles , they are very nice !!!!!!

Whenever I have to judge whether something will fit into a container I think of your (and my) Philpott Syndrome, phoenix grin

Anne58 Wed 31-Jul-13 20:20:05

Phoenix I have done that exact thing today.
My MiL will be here tomorrow, and I am also doing dinner for DD1 and DGD, DD2 and DSil and of course MrA and me.
I decided pudding would be Granjura's cherry trifle and I made it today.
I got out my lovely cut-glass bowl, put in the cake, kirsch, fruit, thickened fruit-juice - and the bowl was full. Nowhere to put the custard and creamshock
I had to resort to spooning the trifle into a larger not-so-nice bowl, and all the layers were spoiled sadblush
I know it will taste just the same but I've had to annotate the recipe 'will not fit into trifle bowl'!

Lilygran Wed 31-Jul-13 18:25:38

OK I'll admit it, me too. I've got a variation which is thinking a piece of furniture will fit into a given space and only finding out it won't when all the furniture has been moved. Yes, at the last count we had 15 tape measures and a dozen rulers, all in pristine condition.

dustyangel Wed 31-Jul-13 17:26:41

I've just realised that I not only have the Phillpotts syndrome but I have become seriously addicted to Phoenix's posts. blush

Anne58 Wed 31-Jul-13 16:47:55

Thanks glamma you're very kind!

glammanana Wed 31-Jul-13 16:33:59

I've just re-read all the posts again from the beginning and must confirm this is why we missed phoenix so much when she was "absent with out leave" grin

Anne58 Wed 31-Jul-13 16:29:06

No, and yes. Hope this helps.

Riverwalk Wed 31-Jul-13 16:24:35

Yes, very clear Phoenix confused

Is it like the Archimedes Principle thingy?

Or does it just mean that I can drink more wine? grin

Anne58 Wed 31-Jul-13 16:06:08

Thought this might explain it better River
