Always fascinating to know what people are reading and what they are making of it. I am deep in the Herries Chronicles by Hugh Walpole. A wonderful sweeping panoramic look at English history through the prism of a family from the Lakes. Highly recommended

New author to me Peter May just started the Lewis trilogy. So far so good

Just finished The fault in our Stars by John Green, about a young girl with cancer. Sounds grim but a riveting read. For a man, he gets into the head of a teenaged girl very well.

Sparkygran, I think you`ll love the Lewis trilogy. I`ve read the first two of another series he`s written, called the Enzo series, about a half Scottish, half Italian, detective living in rural France, but must admit to not liking them anywhere near as much as the Lewis books.

I`ve just started on The Final Scream, by Lisa Jackson, but only a few pages in, so too soon to give an opinion.

I`m now reading Gransnet book of the month Spare Brides, by Adele Parks. Interesting to read how the other half live/lived, but not managed to form a liking of any of the main characters as yet.

I'm re-reading Dr. Zhivago, by Boris Pasternak.
Enjoying it more this time - the names of the characters are confusing, and there are so many threads to the story.
I went back to it because of the current fighting in Russia and the Ukraine.
The book is partly a social history of the Russian people between 1905 and WW2 - helps to understand where they come from.

I`ve seen the film a few times, never read the book, but oh, those haunting brown eyes on Omar Sharif!

I'm reading, Chaplin & Company, by Mave Fellowes. It is a brilliant read I would recommend it. It is her debut novel. Go on give it a try.

I`ve just finished a very sad/happy, thought provoking book, by Susan Lewis, called Never Say Goodbye, it looks at cancer, and how it affects the sufferers and their families, a really good book. I`ve never read Susan Lewis before, must try more of her books. I`m now reading Mad About You, by Sinead Moriarty, not my usual sort of read, but it was half price in Smiths, so thought I`d give it a go.

Finally getting into the Gransnet book 'The Deaths'. Better late than never and it improves as I read on!

I was reading Life of Pi until my e-reader ceased to function I must try to find it in a book shop, or the library.

Atqui Thu 04-Sept-14 10:21:19

I'm reading Life after Life , Kate Atkinson. It's very strange. No point in cheating and reading the end as there doesn't seem to be one!

I`ve just finished Police, by Jo Nesbo, the latest Harry Hole Thriller, it was very good. I`m now reading Path of Needles, by Alison Littlewood, she writes rather strange thrillers, which tend to verge slightly towards the supernatural. I read another of her books a while ago, which I really enjoyed, A Cold Season.

I think I should have written "veer", not verge.

I'm reading the David Jason Autobiography.

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 07-Sept-14 17:08:54

I have just finished Winter in Madrid, one of C. J. Sansome's "other" books. I really enjoyed. I did n't know a thing about the Spanish Civil war.

I`ve just made a start on If the Dead Rise Not, by Philip Kerr. Not sure how it`s going to turn out, it`s a thriller of sorts, set in Berlin between 1934 to 1936, during Hitlers rise to power, and the start of the purging of the Jews.

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 07-Sept-14 18:23:09

That sounds interesting numberplease. Will have a look at that on Amazon. Was in Berlin for a little hol a few weeks back.

numberplease Mon 08-Sept-14 16:14:59

The first few chapters were a bit slow going Jingl, but it`s picking up a bit now, although it hasn`t got me as riveted as some books that I`ve read. Each to their own though, we can`t all like the same things all the time.

TerriBull Tue 09-Sept-14 14:45:47

Just started The Silkworm by Robert Galbraith.

numberplease Wed 10-Sept-14 15:50:44

Have now finished If the Dead Rise Not, but must admit to not being over thrilled with it. On the back of the book, in the synopsis, it starts off Berlin 1936, but the story never reached 1936, it stayed in 1934, until about two thirds of the way through, when it jumped from Berlin to Cuba 1954, and not really a very satisfactory jump either. It`s up to others whether or not to give this book a go, but afraid I can`t recommend it.

Phillipa Gregory`s - The King`s Curse - I just love her books
