Please think of me tomorrow.

I am going to Bristol with 2 colleagues (both in their late twenties)to do a presentation for a potential client. The contract is worth around £150k in the first year.

It will be the last one I do for the company, and I am determined to make it a bloody good one!

I was trying to persuade M, who will be the Account Director for this project (if we/the company get the business) to cover a couple of the slides, but he said "No, you do it, you're far better at presenting than I am." hmm

I am entitled to 6 weeks notice, but my boss does not think it in my best interest to work my notice, even though I have said that I would prefer to. (He has said that I should now view job hunting as a full time job, and has offered me and the other 3 people whose jobs are also redundant, the use of the an "office" facility at his house, i.e. telephone, computer etc, to "spend 9 to 5, just as if you were going to work," seeking new positions. I realise that this is kind of him, but please bear in mind that this is also a man who at our most recent meeting re. the redundancy, was saying how he helped our intern make her C.V run to 5 pages! Every site I have looked at indicates 2 pages maximum.)

Oh well, as one door closes, another one comes off it's hinges and drops on your toes.

PS My boss was, at one stage, wanting me to cease work from last Friday, but I argued the case for this one last blast. I have been working with this potential client since November 2011, plus the Account Director, mentioned above, said that he wouldn't want to do it without me!

Sounds an idiot to me! Enjoy Bristol. Where are you to?

Greatnan Sun 18-Mar-12 15:30:23

Best of luck, Phoenix - and I am sure you will rise again.

Jacey Sun 18-Mar-12 15:33:25

Good luck tomorrow Phoenix ...but suggest that you let client know it is your last 'job' and try networking with them to see if they have any possible vacancies ...such as working for them on their side of this new project!! flowers

NemoNan Sun 18-Mar-12 15:35:50

Sounds like places I have worked for - they can't see further than the end of their noses!

Good luck tomorrow and with the job hunting. Maybe you could offer your services back to them on a freelance basis to do their presentations for future business smile

Anne58 Sun 18-Mar-12 15:38:46

jeni do you mean my colleague or my boss? As to where I'm to, I live in Shebbear, a village about 8 miles from Holsworthy (no, no-one has ever heard of that, either!)

Greatnan thank you, I hope I will. God knows I need to, what with the debt management plan, mortgage etc. I have today completed 4 job applications, hope to at least get some response. I did get one from a job I applied for last week, to say that it had been internally appointed. sad

bagitha Sun 18-Mar-12 15:48:47

Good luck, phoenix. Will be thinking of you in terms of Dumbledore's bird! smile

Oldgreymare Sun 18-Mar-12 16:19:06

Phoenix sock it to 'em! (and to your 'about to be' old boss!) Good luck with your applications.

Butternut Sun 18-Mar-12 16:19:29

All the very best for tomorrow, phoenix - and network like mad!

Divawithattitude Sun 18-Mar-12 16:21:15

I have heard of it, in fact will pass by it tomorrow en route to BRAUNTON.

Anne58 Sun 18-Mar-12 16:21:56

bagitha I use Phoenix for all sorts of things, like passwords etc. It results from a time waaaay back, (previous employment) when I was taken off the projects I was working on, made to work as a commission only sales rep. The projects than failed, so I was asked to come back. I agreed, but on my terms! So, rising from the ashes = Phoenix. I would prefer not to die like Dumbledore's bird, if my (failing) memory serves me, it did look a bit ancient and moth eaten before its' demise! (I am more than likely to be wrong on this)

Jacey i would not do that, for 2 reasons,
1) It would be unprofessional
2) Any job oppotunities that the potential client might have, would not be relevant.

Basically, this potential client and I have been discussing this project via email and telephone for some time. We seem to have established a really good rapport, which I feel might be key to being awarded the contract. I feel I owe it to my boss (and myself) to try to land this deal.

Jacey and Nemonans suggestions are really good. It is just so strange that the 'Account Director' is staying and you are not. Is he sleeping with the boss? In your position, I don't know if I would want to get the contract or not - probably not which makes you a much nicer person than I am. Looking forward to reading about how it went. All good luck.

Faye Sun 18-Mar-12 16:26:33

phoenix I like jacey's suggestion, definitely let the client know it's your last job. They might not need you but may know someone who does. I would also like to know if it is your two colleagues last job there too. Or are they letting go of more experienced people. Whoever is letting you go also sounds like an idiot to me!
Anyway good luck, don't forget the Phoenix always rises. smile

Jacey Sun 18-Mar-12 16:50:13

Dumbledore's bird went up in smoke on moulting day and then rose from the ashes ...beautiful again!

grannyjules Sun 18-Mar-12 16:50:29

Good Luck Phoenix, Go out with a WINNER!!
smile

Anne58 Sun 18-Mar-12 16:54:39

many thanks to all who have posted

I really can't let the potential client know it's my last presentation, it would not be appropriate or professional.

The selection for redunancy seems to have been based on jobs that can be "absorbed"by other departments, i.e. business development can be handled by the account directors, accounts manager can be covered by the finance director (the wife of the MD)

supernana Sun 18-Mar-12 17:14:24

phoenix I'm wishing you well - not just for tomorrow, but for the future. We are rooting for you. smile

Libradi Sun 18-Mar-12 17:19:47

Good luck for tomorrow phoenix. I've heard of Shebbear, my end of the country smile

crimson Sun 18-Mar-12 17:29:07

Not sure that I trust your boss, phoenix. Good luck for tomorrow.

absentgrana Sun 18-Mar-12 17:52:32

I've thought of you many times recently. Good luck for your presentation and good luck in finding a new and better job phoenix

Anne58 Sun 18-Mar-12 18:04:27

Many thanks to all who have posted, your support is very much appreciated.

It's hard to reply to all the questions/suggestions, but Faye the colleagues that will be with me tomorrow are not included within the redunancy "package", but feel that my presence is essential to ensure that we/the company has the best chance of winning the contract. (We have been shortlisted to 3 potential providers, just the same as M&S Money, for which I did both the proposal and the presentation, and guess what, we won the contract!)

Maniac Sun 18-Mar-12 18:14:28

phoenix.I'm just south of Bristol so I'll send some positive vibes.

glammanana Sun 18-Mar-12 18:15:18

phoenix you have to do what is appropriate for you - your professionalism is evident from these postings, and if there is any justice, you will be snatched for another job quickly. Hope it goes really well x
