The moon and planets

The moon and planets were spectacular last night just after it got dark. Venus blasting away very brightly, accompanied by Jupiter, with a thin crescent of moon nearby - and shifting in their juxtaposition of course. And you could see the earthshine clearly - the reflected light from earth on the shadowed part of the moon. Worth a look again tonight I would say folks.

will do and report back

Yes! It looked good a week or so back, when there were those two planets (Venus and Jupiter, I think) looking really bright, and very near to the moon.

Will look again tonight. Lovely clear sky at the mo.

Yes - the skies have been extraordinary for the last few weeks. We have no light pollution here, so it is amazing.

I don't know anything about the planets JessM but I did notice the lovely clear crescent moon last night. I shall look again tonight and see if I can see Venus and Jupiter. smile

Really bright shining "stars" - in the western sky.

Coming out now. Venus v bright, just above moon and jupiter appearing a bit lower in the sky. Worth keeping an eye on in the next couple of hours as the arrangement changes. And a completely cloudless sky here in n. bucks. A rarity.

Yes, it's a wonderful sight here, too - and an amber glow along the horizon in the distance. Truly spectacular!

Gally Mon 26-Mar-12 20:16:01

Thanks Jess. Just wandered home round the harbour and wondered what the bright star was above the crescent moon. Can't see Jupiter yet - must be hiding somewhere and getting up to no good smile

Played 'ambush' (alias hide and seek) in the woods at Dalguise with kids after dark on Saturday night. Lying on the ground (hidden) staring up through the trees at part constellations (Cassiopeia, Ursa Major, Ursa Minor) was fab! So was the smell of the woodland when we lay face down. smile

Jupiter appearing - if you stretch out your hand sideways on - moon just above it and Jupiter below it. About 10 deg to the right. Enjoy.

Mars visible to the SE as well, quite high.

Most wonderful sight, Venus and Jupiter will do this "dance" around each other again in about 12 months time, when they will be in closer conjunction.

yes very spectacular, and the Earthshine on the moon was a good display, it was a busy sky tonight, there were still a few aeroplane streaks visible too.

Just been out there enjoying the clear sky and planets - fabulous to see Jupiter and Venus standing out so clearly.

Maniac Mon 26-Mar-12 22:13:55

Just got back from choir.Amazing views of the night sky.Have rarely seen the new moon and Venus so bright and close to each other.
Moving to this village 4 yrs ago I loved it that we have no street lights apart from main rd so we have great views of the night sky.

jeni Mon 26-Mar-12 22:28:23

Can't see them in possetsad

Jacey Mon 26-Mar-12 23:14:40

Too much street lighting sad

Spectacular here too, been out for a look. DH tried to take photo but not very good, DS is the astrophotographer so await his pictures.

Greatnan Tue 27-Mar-12 14:41:31

I often go out on the balcony at night - no light pollution up here and the skies are wondereful.

Annobel Tue 27-Mar-12 14:47:24

Lucky you, Greatnan. Although well out of Manchester, we do have light pollution here. And when I go outside to look at the sky, I have to wait for my security light to go out. Nevertheless, I've had a great view the past couple of weeks.

One of the reasons we holiday in France, the fabulous night sky. Downside is lumping all DS's equipment while he arrives on a plane.

jeni Tue 27-Mar-12 20:58:12

The best views I remember we're in the middle of Bray harbour in Alderney ci
Sheer magic, and so romantic watching the moon, in all her serenity, glide from one side of the harbour to the other. While I and my beloved sat in the cockpit in silence, wrapped in each others arms!
So perfect!
But alas all gone!
Oh if I could only return to that time!sad

JessM Tue 27-Mar-12 21:01:40

Ah Jeni, a beautiful memory, but sad.

greenmossgiel Tue 27-Mar-12 21:04:24

Glorious sight - just looked out the back door!
