Can anyone take The Daily Mail seriously?

In the on-line edition today, they print pictures of semi-naked women which are obviously meant to titillate. They are such hypocrites. I do have to smile when they print one of their 'Aren't these pictures disgusting' rants as an excuse for giving them maximum publicity.
Of course their speciality is blaming the poor, especially single mothers, for all the ills of society.

Anagram- An IQ is noun and can take a plural.

Anagram Sun 08-Apr-12 11:57:40

You're right, of course, Charlotta - I misread your post, sorry!

Tabloids, including DM print lies without a qualm. I have stood next to my DH while he talked to a DM reporter who rang him about a planned story. "If you print that it will be a lie"said DH. But they did. Look at the stories they made up about the McCanns as well.
Broadsheets have a political agenda of one kind and another but generally I think they at least print versions of truth, with their own slant.

Wow I am in for it here. I am a Daily Mail reader, what a cow I am. I am not interested in what any of you read particularly, at least you think. It is quite worrying how small minded people become when they tell someone they should be ashamed of themselves for reading this paper or that. Newspapers are a business for goodness sake. Do we really think we should all read the same newspapers, we might as well limit ourselves to reading the little red book and nothing else.

To produce a paper is'nt it obvious you hold a certain belief to be able to write in the first place. You would'nt expect the Pope to tell everyone to convert to Islam so why should a newspaper not stick to it's own beliefs. I would be very concerned if I agreed with every article I read. I don't get my knowledge from just reading a paper, I would need to look long and hard at myself if I did. We should be greatful we have such a diverse and free press irrespective of wether or not it follows our own thoughts and opinions.

I think the so -called intellectual papers have been a little disingenuous over the phone hacking, people in glass houses and all that. That goes for the T.V. as well. How do we all think they get their stories for documentaries, from Wikileaks.

Well said, POGS. It is a form of snobbery to look down on someone because of which newspaper they read. I would hate to be limited to The Times, for example - thank goodness for online newspapers! You don't even have to buy one any more.

Eeeek Pogs The Daily Mail? Get thee to a nunnery! grin

Annobel Mon 09-Apr-12 19:59:33

Live and let live on GN, petallus! As long as they don't take us to task for reading the Guardian or the Independent, or whatever....wink

I have stopped getting a newspaper now to save a little cash, but when I did have one, it was the Daily Mail, mainly because I liked the crossword and puzzles.
Greatnan, the pictures of scantily clad women are mainly confined to the online Mail, and were not often in the printed copy.

No need for anyone to get het up about this - I don't look down on anyone for reading a particular paper, much as I dislike the barely concealed racism, sexism and homophobia of the DM. MY contempt is reserved for the publishers and of course that extends to the Murdoch empire as well.
I am entitled to my opinion of newspapers and I don't make personal remarks about other members.

Anagram Mon 09-Apr-12 20:46:27

I honestly don't see any of the failings you have noticed in the DM, Greatnan - racism, homophobia or sexism. I'm not defending any of the daily newspapers, they all have their own agendas and leanings, but I do read a lot of them online. I respect your views, and am of course entitled to mine!

jeni Mon 09-Apr-12 21:30:18

petallusisnt it 'hi thee to nunnery?'

Annobel Mon 09-Apr-12 22:12:19

No, jeni, she's right. Hamlet says: 'get thee to a nunnery' and later says:
'To a nunnery, go!'

There are different forms of intelligence.

I think emotional intelligence is hugely underrated.

wotsamashedupjingl Mon 09-Apr-12 22:20:52

Maybe that's apropos of nothing at all.

wotsamashedupjingl Mon 09-Apr-12 22:21:38

Or maybe it is apropos of the current discussion. confused

wotsamashedupjingl Mon 09-Apr-12 22:21:52

Maybe I should go to bed.

Anagram Mon 09-Apr-12 22:31:38

Maybe we don't all take ourselves as seriously as you think we do, wotsamashedupjingl?

wotsamashedupjingl Mon 09-Apr-12 22:35:29

Let it show then? smile

Anagram Mon 09-Apr-12 22:48:27

Do we have to agree with everyone, then? Or, not disagree?
Or dilute our opinions so that we can't possibly offend anyone? I give up....

Annobel Mon 09-Apr-12 22:51:56

Please can we agree to disagree?

wotsamashedupjingl Mon 09-Apr-12 22:52:17

pardon? confused

Annobel Mon 09-Apr-12 23:15:17

There is room for all kinds of opinions on GN, unless they are '^obscene, racist, contain personal attacks or break the law^' (nettiquette page). I like to think of myself as reasonably tolerant except for things like racism and homophobia - and intolerance!

Annobel Mon 09-Apr-12 23:16:00

Oh dear, my italics didn't work this time - sorry, please take them as read.

Greatnan Mon 09-Apr-12 23:16:00

Annobel - you are quite right. I am happy to accept that many people enjoy the DM and fail to see what I see in some of its reports. Next time I see something blatantly anti-immigrant, or anti single mothers, I will cut and paste it!
As for the semi-naked women, they don't offend me at all - I just find it so hypocritical to take the high moral ground and then print as many pictures of possible which are clearly intended to titillate. The Sun is at least honest! (Well, about their Page 3 Girls). I can't buy the paper here, so I am referring to the on-line version only.

I've just been in a hospital waiting room where I picked up a January edition of the Mail on Sunday. I was surprised at the high standard of the journalism. An excellent interview with Ricky Gervaise, for one thing. I preferred it to the weekend Guardian Mag. However, not sure how I'd feel about the rest of the paper. I shall give it a go this weekend.
