Is wine a posh drink?

An interesting debate on The Wright Stuff today - why is wine considered a posh drink in England, when it is drunk by 'the masses' in France, Spain and Italy. One reason put forward was the difference in price caused by transport and tax costs. Any ideas?

Oh, Hirondelle. The stuff of 'bring a bottle' parties. Cheese and pineapple on sticks and a thick head in the morning!

It doesn't matter - it was just a random thought.
I think posh is shorthand for anything considered to be superior/upmarket/sophisticated/expensive by some people.

My S-I-L made her own wines and as our fellas were playing rugby we decided to have a tasting. The wines were excellent and we tried quite a few so no surprise then that when the lads returned we were in no fit state to go out to dinner. Not a good evening! I still like wine and DH has a wine cellar and loves wine so perhaps we are posh - I don 't know!
