If you were Prime Minister what would you do!

I would bring back Capital Punishment, build more prisons, have zero tolerance for certain crimes. Get rid of Human Rights Bill so illegal immigrants can't hide behind it.

Get back to being Prime Minister all of you! Now! hmm

Annobel Wed 11-Apr-12 14:11:06

soop, I don't like the sound of your swollen leg. Have you told your GP about it? flowers

SOOP Wed 11-Apr-12 14:16:25

Annobel Nurse saw it yesterday when she removed the clips. The swelling is due to bruising. I know what to watch out for re clots and infection. About to lie down for the mandatory two hours. Always think - what a complete waste of time - get between the sheets and drop off into refreshing ZZZZzzzzzzz smile

I appreciate that not everybody feels able to join in serious discussions, but it would be nice, and polite, if they did not try to trivialise them. I don't think I have ever been accused of not having a sense of humour, but this and my expat forums are my only avenues to find out what other people are thinking of the issues of the day, and I would like to be able to exchange views without childish distractions.

wotsamashedupjingl Wed 11-Apr-12 14:26:38

Threads wander.

Don't think a quick enquiry about SOOP's leg counts as trivial, does it? No!

Greatnan Wed 11-Apr-12 14:44:23

Of course not, Ariadne - you know the kind of deliberate dumbing down I mean, I am sure.

Greatnan Wed 11-Apr-12 14:46:38

Soop - I find an afternoon nap very pleasant, once I get back from my walk - it is one of the bonuses of retirement. I now record all my afternoon and early evening programmes, starting with Countdown, because I know I am quite likely to drift off to sleep.

Greatnan smile

If I were the present prime minister I would apologise to the thousands of people who I have made jobless through my policies, to the thousands now desperately trying to make ends meet after cutting their tax credits and ditch the policies made up on the back of a napkin while dining with the millionaire donors who keep my party in being to chase down their own selfish ends.
I would then resign and try to get a proper job in the real world.

Greatnan Wed 11-Apr-12 15:28:36

I'd vote for you, David!

Ariadne Wed 11-Apr-12 15:32:37

David think he'd learn a thing or two then!

Anagram Wed 11-Apr-12 15:36:37

But who would the next PM be if you resign?

Wouldn't it be better to change/reverse some of the present policies if you (as PM) have had a sudden rush of blood to the head?

Carol Wed 11-Apr-12 15:38:32

There's room for trivial, humorous, serious and round the houses discussion on here Greatnan and when anyone posts a serious item that warrants some support, we are all in there like a shot. I come on here for some light relief, as well as discussion. I have quite a heavy time of things on some days, so I turn to this site for some much needed distraction.

Today has been a good day - lots of laughter and giggles, and time to look around and offer support, too. On other days, you may feel like posting your most welcome jokes, which I always look for, whilst others, including me, are raising their own serious issues and want to avoid the lighter threads. I took myself off for a few days' break from Gransnet when I got fed up with people who had asked for support being shot down for no good reason. It's all down to choice.

Flights of fancy about being prime minister invite a whole range of responses, both trivial and serious, and that's what we've got here. Interesting and fun, too. smile

I would reverse the Granny Tax if I were prime minister, having sacked my chancellor!

petallus Wed 11-Apr-12 16:10:04

I'd keep the Granny Tax but reinstate working tax credits for people working sixteen hours a week. I'd scrap charitable status for private schools and put more money into the state system.

Generally, I'd find out what I had to do to narrow the gap between rich and poor in this country and do it.

I think that's enough to be going on with!

ninnynanny Wed 11-Apr-12 17:07:05

I have nothing against migrants coming here to the UK to work and raise their families, what I object to is ILLEGAL immigrants and terrorists using the Human Rights Act to stay in this country, using Legal Aid paid for by tax payers and living on our benefits.

You might not agree with me and I know Capital Punishment will not be reinstated in the UK but I think for premeditated murder it should be.

Zero tolerance should apply to race hate crimes.

Carol Wed 11-Apr-12 17:10:25

Yes, zero tolerance for race hate crimes. Should never be any different.

Anagram Wed 11-Apr-12 17:13:36

I agree with your last post, ninnynanny, apart from the reinstatement of Capital Punishment.

Annobel Wed 11-Apr-12 17:27:18

Race hate and homophobic crimes too.

Pennysue Wed 11-Apr-12 17:31:55

IMHO the problem with reintroducing capital punishment is that murderers would walk free. Would it be impossible to make up a jury which would agreed to capital punishment?

What should happen is that Life means Life and not 13 years or whatever!

ninnynanny Wed 11-Apr-12 17:38:43

Pennysue I agree Life should mean Life with no parole.

MrsJamJam Wed 11-Apr-12 17:45:02

What do we all mean by 'zero tolerance'?

And do some of us really want to label some human beings as incapable of any redemption, and offer them no encouragement or opportunity to turn themselves into contributing members of society.

IMO behind every transgressor you will find a variety of influences and horrible circumstances - not in any way an excuse, but a reason which can be a basis for change.

MrsJamJam Wed 11-Apr-12 17:46:21

And after that serious comment, I'm still rooting for calorie free chocolate and some daily sunshine!

Carol Wed 11-Apr-12 17:56:34

Zero tolerance on race hate crime - non-discretionary action, no cautions, reprimands, diversions from prosecution, or turning a blind eye, no matter how 'minor' the offence appears to be. Stops the police from ignoring racial taunts and ensures complaints are investigated. Ensures racially motivated offences are dealt with, and any alleged crime involving a possible race hate component has to be flagged when going through the judicial process. They have to show a paper-trail of action taken within a stipulated lime boundary, and report the outcome, so crime statistics can be gathered and evidence provided to show that there has been a resulting drop in race hate crime being complained about. Race hate is seen as an aggravating factor when imposing a sentence at a criminal court.
