I would bring back Capital Punishment, build more prisons, have zero tolerance for certain crimes. Get rid of Human Rights Bill so illegal immigrants can't hide behind it.

ninnynanny are you David Cameron?

Joan for PM

More or less repeating what I said the first time round, I would involve Parliament more in the role of governement. I have no desire to be a dictator, even a benign one.

spot on Joan smile

jeni Tue 21-Aug-12 12:47:25

elegran I'm not sure but whenever it's a 5star bore its always early am. Perhaps somebody with more knowledge of lunar phases and atmospheric pressure and tidal curves can explain. It's beyond my day skipper grade of sailing!

Back to the thread:

Politics
As PM I would make a new ministry - the Ministry of Common Sense.

Education
I would make the teaching of a modern foreign language compulsory from grade 1 (ie age 4 or 5). Mandarin would be good, but it would depend on teacher availability. Urdu, German, French, Spanish, Russian.....would all be fine. This is because being bilingual or multilingual improves brain function, makes a person think in wider ways, and of course increases inter-cultural understanding. You never just learn a language - you learn the language and culture together. This would make the whole country brainier in a generation, and destroy residual racism.

( No good saying that it is more important to learn English skills - learning another language improves skills in English and gives an understanding of how language works.)

Health
I would make whatever laws necessary to protect the NHS and keep it well funded, and include dental care.

Housing
I would make it compulsory for councils to build more council houses, and to use the rent to maintain them and build more still. I would fund homeless shelters, and reopen mental hospitals for those street people with psyche problems, because many of them would be in this category.

Children
I would increase child protection systems, and introduce checks and balances to ensure resources are used correctly.

Transport
Fund and improve public transport. Encourage canal use.

This would all have to be funded. I'd increase taxes for the rich, but not so much that they all bugger off to tax havens. I would tax junk food in order to raise funds and improve health. I would introduce a state lottery to help fund the health system. True, there are problem gamblers but they gamble anyway. I would increase the tax on petrol and diesel to encourage people into public transport which is better for the environment. I would encourage towns and villages to copy 'Incredible Edible Todmorden' thus reducing food miles and food imports.

And then, when I'd achieved all this I would provide triple strength umbrellas for everyone, to protect from the fall-out from flying pigs.

Elegran Tue 21-Aug-12 10:01:28

How is that? High tide is not always at the same times.

jeni Mon 20-Aug-12 20:23:15

It's usually very early in the morning!

Elegran Mon 20-Aug-12 20:21:07

JO4 I was crossing the bridge at Chepstow, aged about 4, with my parents when the Severn Bore came sweeping up the Wye. I had no idea what it was and was petrified - cling to the bridge railings that were the only thing between me and this wall of water and howled.

JO4 Mon 20-Aug-12 20:06:42

I made Soop swear! blush

grin

JO4 Mon 20-Aug-12 20:05:33

The moment is never passed Anagram.

Never completely.

JO4 Mon 20-Aug-12 20:04:15

I would ^love* to see the severn bore.

It never does it when I am there though.

Would be best at night. (spooky!)

Anagram Mon 20-Aug-12 20:04:13

Quite. I think the moment's passed....grin

JO4 Mon 20-Aug-12 20:02:49

I mean, about being the severn bore.

Anagram Mon 20-Aug-12 20:02:29

I know - I meant was jeni referring to herself in a derogatory way....

JO4 Mon 20-Aug-12 20:02:20

jeni grin

If you say so. [shrug]

jeni Mon 20-Aug-12 20:01:25

More than once! The barrage would generate electricity at all times except slack water according to an article on the news tonight!
Bore has other meanings as well! I live looking over the Severn estuary!

Greatnan Mon 20-Aug-12 19:57:40

It is a high tide in the Severn - I think it happens once a year. It would make a good way of producing electricity, some people think.

Anagram Mon 20-Aug-12 19:56:10

Severn Bore? confused

jeni Mon 20-Aug-12 19:54:59

That's me!

Greatnan Mon 20-Aug-12 19:39:38

Peak flow? I thought you were on about the Severn Bore.

Annobel Mon 20-Aug-12 19:37:31

jeni, I'd forgotten about peak flow - mine's never above 300 or below 250. I am very good at spitting cherry stones, though olives will do if no cherries available. grin

Greatnan Mon 20-Aug-12 19:25:15

Glitabo - yes, I was Head of the Wirral Schools' Remedial Service for four years. Very interesting work, but certainly challenging - mainly because I was fighting a very right-wing council for resources all the time.

JO4 Mon 20-Aug-12 19:21:09

Do not trivialise the thread
