Feeling sorry for myself. Seem to have got to 60 and after a lifetime of working and looking after family then grandson find that I have no real friends. Didn't seem to notice when I was so busy, sounds daft I know, now I find I do not have the knack of making friends. I get out and about as much as possible and do meet people. I think I am fairly nice and normal, friendly and not really shy but friendships do not come I have no one I can I could go out with for a coffee or phone for a chat. Feel really lonely, time on my hands etc. Looking back this has always been the case. Read all sorts of tips about how to make friends but nothing seems to work for me. Something must put people off me I think. Anyone else like me?

I have just landed at one of our spur of the moment parties so am off to sample some Cheeky Peach wine and meet up with some of the girls so we may have a few bad heads in the morning.grin

Thankyou so much for your kind thoughts, it means so much.
I looked after our GD (aged 8) today while DiL went to say her last goodbye to her mum before the funeral next week. ( GD didn't know where she was going)
GD put her little hand in mine and asked can I stand by her at her Nana's funeral. This made me feel so sad but also so proud of our little GD. If she can be brave, well so can I. !!
Thank you dear friends its time to pull up my socks and get on with it, I need to be strong for my family smile

Kate I had a look at the reviews for the book The Dressmaker and it looks like it might be a good read, thanks. There are certainly some characters around here and the nearest town is heritage listed, it looks like it was built in the fifties and stayed that way. I find old places really interesting and wish I could go back in time and have a look.

I really think I am starved for conversation with people my own age. There is nothing quite like having a good long chat with someone who is on the same page. smile

Crimson, you will have to tell me what you have by way of available activities for older people.

I am a committed couch potato [ten-hour shifts was enough exercise for me] but until recently I walked pretty much everywhere after I retired. Then, I was skittled by a mad loon cyclist riding at speed on the pavement, [ a middle aged man, wearing leathers, & a helmet, no bell, no warning shout, until he yelled that I should look where I was going.] That left me with ripped knee muscles and an award winning limp. Now the only thing I ride is my broomstick.

Other than being aware of the current craze for lycra wrapped cycling, and running, I don't know anyone our ages who does much sporting stuff. Australians are sports mad, but most seem to do watching, rather than playing - especially watching football, or which we have many codes.

Living within walking distance to a beach might mean swimming and surfing, but parking is usually impossible if you need to drive there, so…

Bush walking is popular, but I would rather stick pins in my eyes than stumble over rocks and down steep slopes. Once was enough.

Probably TMI, sorry.

Glammanana: thanks for your welcome.
I am keying VERY quietly in case you have a hangover, if you do, I hope the party was worth it.

Kate2012 Sat 28-Apr-12 06:17:46

Faye: I do understand your missing conversations with people of your own age. I have been here long enough to be able to talk to most people about most local things but only until the talk turns to growing up days.

For example, I remember school milk as being so cold it froze in the bottle, not becoming so warm from being left to stand in the sun that it became undrinkable. That is when both sides lose the other in remembering school days.

A small thing, but having to explain such differences means you lose the flow of conversation, and makes you realise that you are a long way from home.

Riverwalk:
A belated thank you for your welcome.
20C here today [winter woolly time for us] but sunny.

You might not think so, but it is possible to have too much sunshine - especial when it come with 36C temps.
Grey days are my favourites, though it does help that they don't come along every day.

Another thing you might not know is that, Sydney's annual rainfall is higher than that of London. Not much consolation I know, but something to think about as you wade through your puddles.

Good morning. kate2012. 4°C here and technically spring. It is spring! I heard a cuckoo yesterday. It will warm up to about 12° during the day. Just lovely. Warmer in direct sunlight of course.

nanachrissy Sat 28-Apr-12 07:47:47

Welcome Kate, I've only just caught up with this thread.smile

Annika I can only imagine how hard it is for you to have lost such a dear friend, I would be devastated to lose any of mine.
It seems your little gd will help you through the funeral flowers

Annobel Sat 28-Apr-12 10:25:22

Kate - I love it when a newbie comes complete with a broomstick! Here it is dry for a change though the brook that flows past the end of my garden is still a raging beast. The wind is getting up and gales are forecast. It's 8C outside my back door, in the sun.

whenim64 Sat 28-Apr-12 10:37:37

Kate we have a lovely grey day here (up the road from Annobel ) and you are welcome to share it with us, in return for some of your sunshine. smile

Annobel Sat 28-Apr-12 10:54:56

Definitely sunny right now in my little corner of Cheshire, when!

glammanana Sat 28-Apr-12 11:03:03

Kate2012 No need for the silent treatment to-day no hangover present I am not bad when it comes to parties just like a good sleep,I travelled on my 4X4 turbo charged broomstick (I upgraded last year)and managed to navigate back home with no problems,I missed the turnoff so ended up coming home via The Mersey. So glad to see some more of your posts and the conversation is very nostalgic with regard to school milk as I was a milk monitor (my claim to fame).smile

whenim64 Sat 28-Apr-12 11:04:56

Annobel you're right! The sun has just started coming out here and the clouds are going at a rate of knots, thank goodness. sunshine

Gally Sat 28-Apr-12 11:06:01

Welcome Kate. I shall be in Sydney (Northern beaches) for 2 months from mid July. Not really looking forward to your winter, it still being far from winter here - but needs must grin sunshine

harrigran Sat 28-Apr-12 11:07:54

Hope all goes well Gally smile

harrigran Sat 28-Apr-12 11:09:26

I got a new broomstick last week. DH actually thinks it is his for brushing the leaves off the artificial grass but I know better wink

soop Sat 28-Apr-12 13:46:14

harri Is your broomstick turbo-charged? Does it have sat-nav? What time should I expect you? Where shall we have a trial run? Do I need to wear my thermals...or is it centrally heated? grin

harrigran Sat 28-Apr-12 19:47:01

soop I don't do chilly, it is toasty warm and even has extra tartan rugs for our knees. It is better than sat- nav it is gran-nav, I just type in the gran's name and away we go. Could be dodgy tonight I have a big pot of leek and potato soup that I made yesterday grin
