Oh well I'm not quite 60 but it looks like it'll be back to the yoghurt then (yuk - TMI) smile

nuttynorah Tue 24-Apr-12 12:37:10

I could be wrong but I think that the recommended age range (16-60yrs) relates to the sale of Canesten. Young girls and older women are supposed to be checked by a doctor first (to make sure it is thrush & not something more serious) & then have it prescribed if necessary.

imjingl Tue 24-Apr-12 12:49:54

That could well be it.

jeni Tue 24-Apr-12 12:50:07

I think you're right I can see no other reason. Only canestten hc would cause skin thinning! I do note however it destroys latex condoms and diaphragms!

nightowl Tue 24-Apr-12 12:52:38

No worries there jeni wink

greenmossgiel Tue 24-Apr-12 12:55:24

I bought it my local chemist the other day with no problem. confused

greenmossgiel Tue 24-Apr-12 13:01:58

Just Googled it and then saw nuttynorah's comment. The pharmacist knows my age - nevermind!!

Boots can be a bit funny about selling certain items. One assistant almost refused to hand over a bottle of kaolin and morphine, although our family has used it for years - she insisted there were better products on the market and quizzed me on what I wanted it for. Perhaps she thought I was going to somehow strain off the morphine! (Don't think there's actually any in it now).

Mamie Tue 24-Apr-12 13:48:25

Yes I think it is because constant thrush is a symptom of vaginal atrophy and it needs to be checked. Annoying though because you can't buy the combi tablet and cream in France - when I asked about it the doctor was amazed and said "in France we wouldn't use something we swallowed for thrush...."

nuttynorah Tue 24-Apr-12 13:51:53

I went to buy the Canesten Combi pack (with the capsule) and the male pharmacist asked me if I was pregnant or breast-feeding. I was quite flattered as I'm nearly 58 but my husband disgraced me by laughing loudly.

I was at my yearly check up for my HRT a few years ago with a new surgery.
The Dr went through all the usual questions then said
'what do you do for contraception'
on seeing my shocked look and reply of ....
'we dont use any contraception'

She replied 'well I would not recommend unprotected sex at this time'.

I came out of the surgery in a daze, all I could think of was babies shock

Got home and phoned DD and told her and said OMG what could have happened shock we will have to use protection from now on....

'Mum she said Dad had a vasectomy years ago'

confused I had forgotten.

I once had a Saturday job in a chemist. One day a young man came in and asked for a packet of 3, well, whispered it actually and so I told him to repeat it, which he did. My reply was 'packet of 3 what?' in my normal voice to which this man blushed and after repeating his request and receiving a polite but blank expression asked to speak to the manager, who was also the pharmacist at the back. I called the manager [male] over and said again in my normal voice 'this gentleman would like a packet of 3 but I don't know what it is or where to find it'. The manager gently said he would take over!!!! Afterwards he kindly explained what they were and where I could find them in the future. So I learned something that Saturday! I was 15.

When we used to go to Europe camping for 6 weeks every summer my Mum would fill the boot with STs for the 3 females in the family as she was so worried about trying to ask for them in a foreign language - it left very little room for any other packing!

Talking of condoms, I can remember driving my D and (now) SIL to the FP clinic when they were in their teens. SIL (who is a bit of a character) emerged with 2 bags full of condoms, one for them and the other for me and my OH "as we were going on holiday and might need them!" I was not quite sure what to say, but took them anyway! I really like that sort of openness - in contrast to the secretive attitude to these subjects when I was young. Much healthier I think!

Anagram Tue 24-Apr-12 18:29:05

It is indeed healthier, Mishap, but it still makes me feel a bit uncomfortable! I'm afraid old attitudes die hard.....confused

glassortwo Tue 24-Apr-12 18:57:49

We used a FP clinic when we were courting.

On our 1st visit my DH was asked how old he was and he said 17 3/4 grin grin never let him live it down grin

POGS Tue 24-Apr-12 20:01:54

Mishap.

KY! I don't know wether to feel sorry for you or be jealous? The latter I hope.

Hattie64 Tue 24-Apr-12 20:14:52

Last year I had a bad skin infection all over, including my nether regions. I went to Boots to buy a tube of Canesten, and yes there was the young lad behind the counter who wanted to know what I wanted it for. I said it was personal, but he was adament he needed to know, so I said it was to put on my fanny. You should have seen his face.

Anagram Tue 24-Apr-12 20:29:49

grin Hattie! I wish I'd been there.

POGS Tue 24-Apr-12 20:33:54

Hattie64. You made me laugh for the first time today, thank you.
