I wonder if anyone can help me here? I have been plagued recently, for no reason whatsoever, about a story I read a long while ago, featuring an elder from and Indian tribe, and his young grandson, who went on a journey together. The grandson became lonely and longed for his parents,, the elderly Indian told the young one to go and give a tree a message for his parents, and the wind would pass it on. I do not remember the end of the story, and I can only think that the author's first name was Henry and that is all. I would love to read the story again, if it is in print. I believe too that the story about the young couple who were desperately poor, but each had a cherished possession, which each of them sold at Christmas in order to buy the other a gift to suit their cherished possession which they then no longer had, was also written by the same Henry? Anyone know what I'm talking about?

The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry is probably the second story you're thinking of, PRINTMISS. I don't recognise the first one, but if you Google O. Henry you'll no doubt be able to find it. 
I love listening to the trees - they each have different sounds - have you noticed? I am actually quite deaf, but I can always hear the wind, which I find quite fascinating.
