I love listening to the trees - they each have different sounds - have you noticed? I am actually quite deaf, but I can always hear the wind, which I find quite fascinating. hmm

i don't wish to be fanciful but maybe someone has whispered to the trees a message for you?

Thank you both, I thought I had posted this thank you yesterday, so sorry for the delay. I shall google O'Henry to see what I can find. The name Henry just popped into my head whilst I was writing the first post but I just do not understand why the story of the Indian is bugging me so at the moment.

Printmiss I wondered whether the author could be O Henry, whose books my father used to read. I Googled him and found this page en.wikipedia.org/wiki/O._Henry

It mentions the story about the young couple. I did not read any further - just copied the link and posted it.

The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry is probably the second story you're thinking of, PRINTMISS. I don't recognise the first one, but if you Google O. Henry you'll no doubt be able to find it. smile

I wonder if anyone can help me here? I have been plagued recently, for no reason whatsoever, about a story I read a long while ago, featuring an elder from and Indian tribe, and his young grandson, who went on a journey together. The grandson became lonely and longed for his parents,, the elderly Indian told the young one to go and give a tree a message for his parents, and the wind would pass it on. I do not remember the end of the story, and I can only think that the author's first name was Henry and that is all. I would love to read the story again, if it is in print. I believe too that the story about the young couple who were desperately poor, but each had a cherished possession, which each of them sold at Christmas in order to buy the other a gift to suit their cherished possession which they then no longer had, was also written by the same Henry? Anyone know what I'm talking about?
