Go to bed at eleven, am dozing nicely when at about 1 am something starts that "my battery is low" beep.
Decide I must have left phone receiver too loose on its stand, lift it and replace it firmly, return to dozing.
Five minutes later beeps restart. Unplug phone and take it downstairs to kitchen and close door on it.
As I get back into bed beeps begin again in my ear. Collect everything in bedroom with a battery and take it downstairs.
Re-enter bedroom to another beep. Suspect it is the smoke alarm on the top landing. Look in cupboard under stair for new battery. Get out stepladder and try to remove cover of smoke alarm (not usually my job). Seems impossible.
Turn on laptop and log into Gransnet while I listen out for more beeps. Silence for twentyfive minutes.
It is now after two o'clock. If I go back to bed I could be woken again in five minutes. If I don't there will be no more beeps but I will be fit for nothing tomorrow.
