Good Morning all! sunshine

Mamie, I've just remembered where the hotel was that we stayed in. Could it have been St Aubin? In film footage that we've seen since then, of D-Day landings, I'm sure I've recognised that building. glass, I know what you mean. That trip was something I'll never forget.

Butternut Wed 06-Jun-12 10:41:28

That's good to hear glass. Communities getting together makes quite an impact on life, so great you're all thinking of having a yearly get-together. sunshine

Mamie Wed 06-Jun-12 10:38:45

Yes the D-day beaches do have a amazing, evocative feel. We have quite a lot of contemporary film and you can still pick out some of the houses today. Having said that, they are now also the beaches where we go to swim, picnic and play with the grandchildren. Round here, there are lots of memorials in the village churchyards to soldiers and airmen killed in the battle during the first part of August; we quite often pop in to visit them. I am always very touched by how beautifully the local people look after them.

Well we had our Jubilee celebration and the sunshine held until 5 mins before the start and then it started to drizzle sad but it didnt stop the party.
The children had a fantastic day we played rounders and all kinds, and the turn out was fantastic even a young couple who had just moved into the court that weekend.
The food tables were groaning with everyones contributions. A merry time was had by all. They have all decided to get together at least annually for a street party. It was good to see them getting to know one and another they all come and go back and forward to work and there was not much interaction other than between your immediate neighbours. sunshine

I have taken a few photos I hope they are ok as I had a glassortwo but going to do FIL grocery shopping and will upload them later. smile

green we were over in France on the 50th Anniversary of Sword Beach and on the 7th June were due home so we made a detour on the way to the ferry. DS was covering this in History at the time and it made sense to make a visit for him to actually stand on the beach.... but standing on that beach was eerie, I can honestly say its the only place that has ever had that effect on me, there was not a sound, no birds nothing..the hairs on my neck were stood on end.

greenmossgiel Wed 06-Jun-12 09:38:58

Mamie - we came over to visit the War Cemeteries a couple of years ago. We discovered my late father-in-law's employer's grave there at Hermanville, and it meant so much to us to be able to go there and find 'him'. He'd been a very fine and well-respected man, and was posthumously awarded the Military Cross for his actions on D-Day. We stayed at a hotel which overlooked Sword Beach, and my husband took an early morning walk along there, no doubt with his own thoughts of how that terrible day had been. Before we'd left home, we'd gone to where Major C had lived and chosen a small pebble, which we laid in the soil against his stone.

Jeni have a great time.
My friend is off today and was told to take 4 lots of 'fancy dress' as well as 4 formal outfits! Now that's a packiing nightmare!
Altogether now:
Sailing .... we are sailing.....

Oldgreymare Wed 06-Jun-12 09:15:07

Me too Jess on both counts!
Went into a state of suspended animation yesterday, 3 layers of clothing AND covered in a blanket then realised I COULD put the heating on! So masses of catching up to do.
Watched the jubilee concert 'highlights' which made me even more miserable ( someone ought to tell Elton and Paul, once my favourites, that it really is time to retire!).
While I'm on a rant... to add to the dyed hair he has started plucking his eyebrows and would make a lovely old dear in drag! hmm Paul that is.

GoldenGran Wed 06-Jun-12 09:07:40

Relieved you know what is now over, at last, although we had a nice quiet weekend catching up after trip followed by viruses. Very nice late birthday meal in Loch Fyne last night. They got the creme brûlée just right as well. You could taste the egg.
I need to get nose to grindstone today. Rather a long list.

Mamie Wed 06-Jun-12 07:45:30

Awake 4.30 French time; must be in preparation for catching ferry to UK tomorrow. There is a service for D-Day at Ranville today, but have too much getting ready to do to get there, which is a shame. It is lovely to see how many veterans come back year after year, some of them staying with the same French families. Hope to see some of them on the boat tomorrow.

Morning Butty Isn't a restorative shower in the morning a wonderful thing for putting some life back in you?

jeni I hope you are relaxing and enjoying your first full day on board. A cruise breakfast and an exciting day ahead - fantastic! smile

Butternut Wed 06-Jun-12 07:28:47

Have woken up (late for me) as crabby as hell - still tired. Hot shower should sort me out then onwards......hmm

GoldenGran Wed 06-Jun-12 06:35:05

I'm up and going swimming and then it's a day of sorting the house out. It seems to have been taken over by red whit and blue thanks to enthusiasm for all things royal of DGD.
