Hurrah for the Jubilee celebrations. What a wonderful day. We are very good at coping with( or ignoring )the rain. Well done Her Majesty. Still more to come. On Tuesday we will be at Layer Marney Tower in Essex welcoming her majesty, Queen Elizabeth 1st., with faeries ,tumblers, a Tudor picnic, juggling and Tudor games,Musicians and dancing. Come rain or shine!

Yes Bags, of course you can ask whatever odd questions you like. Do continue to do so. smile I'm sure you will.

Oldgreymare Wed 06-Jun-12 09:42:05

Catch up OGM! Paul M has been mentioned in this thread too!
Yes, defo Ken Dodd.....
Oh crikey! Olympic closing ceremony nooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Annobel Wed 06-Jun-12 09:02:12

Liz and Phil's wedding was in November 1947. I'm fairly sure the Mountbattens were there.

JessM Wed 06-Jun-12 08:01:37

India and Pakistan granted independence in August 1947. So that is when he came home.
Phillip chatting up the child princess a long time before that.
Mountbatten also "credited" with pushing for a disastrous raid on Dieppe in ww2. But when you moved in certain circles your mistakes were forgiven and you keep on getting promoted. Certainly didn't get top job in India on the basis of a reputation for making brilliant judgements during the war.

Agree with a lot of the stuff about Mountbatten, but Pricess Elizabeth met Philip long before the Mountbattens went to India. They were married in 1947.

Bells plural. Ignore this one; just a diversionary tactic wink

But don't ignore the real one!

Well, yous (sic) can if you want.

Bags Wed 06-Jun-12 06:26:13

Pedant alert bells ringing! Someone take it to the pedants' corner wink

Bags Wed 06-Jun-12 06:23:47

ej, thank you! I've been wondering who it was that he reminded me of! grin

jing, I'm allowed to ask odd (or even daft) questions, as is everyone else. I know it's not something you would ever do (cough! splutter! wink), but live and let live, wot?

Must be generational..I did not see the concert as was out but younger acquaintances have said Grace was best in show! Just say Paul m at the end simpering behind HMQ looking ancient and ( as I have already said elsewhere) more like Ken Dodd!

merlotgran Tue 05-Jun-12 23:07:57

Grace Jones seemed to be belting out a fine tune but then I was so mesmerized by the hula hoop I wasn't really concentrating on her voice.....Perhaps that was the plan.

j04 Tue 05-Jun-12 23:06:20

I don't think he was ever a marvellous singer. It's something else. Personality that comes through when he sings? He's definitely still got a certain something.

Voices do age. Frank Sinatra's did. He still sang.

Anagram Tue 05-Jun-12 23:05:12

They can't reach the high notes, so they sort of improvise - it's painful!
Did Grace Jones ever 'have it'? hmm
Agree, merlotgran with your choices.

GoldenGran Tue 05-Jun-12 23:01:01

Did he have a sore throat, or is that his voice now? If it is, then he should definitely give upPaul McCartney I mean. It's sad though,I've always been a fan.

jeni Tue 05-Jun-12 23:00:53

Grace?

merlotgran Tue 05-Jun-12 22:51:31

As a result of the concert, my give up now list is: Cliff Richard, Paul McCartney, Shirley Bassey and Elton John. Tom Jones and Stevie Wonder can still cut it.

Anagram Tue 05-Jun-12 22:45:47

He didn't get away with it to my mind!
What is it with all these old-timers that they think they've still got it after all these years?

merlotgran Tue 05-Jun-12 22:38:44

Oh Gawd! Paul McCartney has announced he'll be closing the opening ceremony at the Olympics. He just about got away with sounding like a strangled cat at the Jubilee concert. Quit while you're ahead, you silly man and I say this as a huge Beatles fan.

j04 Tue 05-Jun-12 22:37:29

grin

j04 Tue 05-Jun-12 22:36:57

Very good speckie.

Good old Elvis.

specki4eyes Tue 05-Jun-12 22:28:36

Hey Mr Tambourine Man play a song for me
In the JINGLE JANGLE morning I'll be following you.

Oh my lost youth sad

j04 Tue 05-Jun-12 22:21:45

The Queen says she is 'humbled' by the outpourings of praise and all the cheering, over the Jubilee weekend.

I don't want the Queen to be humble! I want her to be regal!

Don't be humble your Maj. smile

Anagram Tue 05-Jun-12 22:19:36

Yes, I'm looking forward to that!

j04 Tue 05-Jun-12 22:19:14

400 calories BTW smile

j04 Tue 05-Jun-12 22:18:25

Sorry. Just went off to do half an hour spinning on exercise bike. [halo] [dripping sweat]

I had better wait until after the Ann webchat or she won't know who I am. If she should answer a question of mine. smile

nanaej Tue 05-Jun-12 21:58:53

J04 you will eventually become Mr Tambourine girl!
