Women's Magazines for forties/fifties age group.

My DD took our 18th month old grandson to her local library, and while she was there she saw a free copy of Nature times, I'll have that she thought , she thought it might show a few places of intrest to take our granson to.
She got home and with coffee in hand she took a closer look, only to find it was a copy of mature times . As she is only 29 I think she has a few years yet before she starts reading things like that

Have 2DDs and 2DILs with money to waste so get them passed on: Red, Grazia and Cosmopolitan!

I find that The Lady has something to cater for most tastes.

I vary depending on my mood. This week I fancy The Lady. I also like Home & Antiques. I used to enjoy 25 Beautiful Homes but got fed up with them being [1] too beautiful and [2] the change to having more homes featured from around the world.

nina my neighbour often pops a copy of Yours through the letter box and I always find something of interest.

'Yours' is a fortnightly magazine aimed at 50+ it has a good variety of features plus a short story.

I must confess that apart from the Radio Times I do not really do magazines, I look at the covers of the ones near the checkout in the supermarket and the ones like Hello etc, seem to be about people I haven't heard of, and am rather gald that I haven't!

Even the other ones, that might be regarded as somewhat up-market, seem to be churning out the same old stuff, and often when analysed have more pages of ads than features.

I buy Cheshire Life as I have always been interested in nice properties from the time when I was working in the business,it also keep's me up to date as to where Farmers Markets are being held so a good few days out can be arranged.
Good Housekeeping for the recipes and for makeover idea's,apart from those I don't really bother as the cost can soon mount up at nearly £3/4 a time.

That's not a magazine, petallus! Can you imagine Ian Hislop's face if it were described as one.....

I like Prima, too, TendringGran. It's mainly tips etc, and there are few, if any, articles on celebrities. I've given up on Good Housekeeping as I was getting really fed-up of reading about how well-off women pulled themselves out of the grim realities of their lives to make themselves even richer and more 'successful' - some do consider making that even more money counts as success...

W and H good for fashion dreams, but the articles I find unbelievably patronising- trying to jolly us all up as if we were all scaredy cats lacking confidence, motivation, acheivments of our own. No pateince with it. Have to confess to Prima as having clothes within my price range and good on craft and a free dressmaking pattern. Country Homes and Interiors I like and "Living" for funky decor. (We've just spent the last four years doing two barn conversions).

I feel that there isn't a magazine out there for me. I don't want to read about which minor celebrity is going out with who. I no longer need tips on child care, what over priced handbad is the latest must have, and a make over will not change my life for the better. Although looking in the mirror would not be so scary .

I don't buy any magazines any more. Their very covers put me off. I do read the weekend mags which come with the papers, but that's it. Can't say I miss them either.

Yes GHK is obsessed with women succeeding and starting their own businesses. Presumably reader research tells them this is a good thing to keep repeating.
W and H always seems to start with young models in exotic locations wearing implausible expensive clothes. And then there are the middle aged celebs made over and photoshopped beyond all recognition. Grouch grouch, don't like this wind.

I've been picking up Easy Living-under the Vogue banner so more upmarket in some ways but recommends books and occasionally affordable clothes

A Glossy magazine was always one of my indulgencies but nowadays I find them all a bit redundant. Wome & Home is OK but GoodHousekeeping is definately all about how brilliant we should be!!!! I used to enjoy Country Living until I moved to the country and found that it realy only works if you dont live in the country! - but perhaps thats just me!. I do rummage through other half's Saga magazine if desperate but I get annoyed that although they use age apropriate models in the fashion bits they are still very very slim!

If someone has any ideas about a decent magazine I too would be interested.

susie Do you mean you can't do all that and read RED at the same time?

I have bought Good Housekeeping for years even though some parts do irritate me now - usually about heroic women holding down a fabulous business, converting a Georgian rectory whilst writing and award women novel and cicumnavigating the globe in a canoe. I like RED for fashion stuff and make up- makes me feel girly and a bit glamorous even though most of the stuff is very expensive.

What you can buy rather depends on your interests. I buy Country Living, a general magazine covering homes, clothes and eco issues. Some people enjoy Saga magasine, which is a much more attractive and interesting magazine than it was 10 years ago.

Why not find a large Newsagent with a good range of magazines and spend half an hour or more browsing through them. Move away from narrowly womens magazines to other sectors, think of what interests you have and look at the more specialist magazines. You may find a new magazine in ana rea you ahve never looked at before

Its not a Womens mag but I love it, I find all the usual mags full of rubbish, you may have something similar in your area.

Living North covers a wide variety, and also informs me of local exhibitions etc.

Happy I've had the same problem. I used to enjoy buying magazines occasionally, but they are just full of celebrity rubbish and fashion/beauty recommendations which are mainly generated by "freebies" to the editorial staff.
Pages of adverts to bulk them out, and no articles of much interest.
I know I'm not in your age group, but we share the problem!
