Almost a prayer!

This is a poem I wrote before I gave up completely on men.

If I had a god (which I don't)
And I thought he would answer a prayer
(Which he won't),
I would ask for a mate,
Meaning both lover and friend,
Confidant, critic and all.
What would he be, this dream mate?
Warm and funny, of course,
Clever and kind.
Thinking I'm right when I'm wrong,
But, most of all, strong.

The strong can be gentle and kind
But they don't make demands
They think their own thoughts
They know their own minds.
They can take alternative views
Without losing face -
They give in with grace.

The strong approve of themselves
They don't need another's belief.
They handle their grief
With dignity, courage and calm.
They don't look for balm.

I'll never look up to a man -
That isn't my style,
But looking across would be nice
Once in a while.
Are you listening, god, whatever you are?
You know I won't settle for less,
So do what you can,
Send me a man.

Learnergran flowers my sister was diagnosed with stomach cancer over 10 years ago. Last year she bought herself a new car to celebrate being a cancer survivor! I hope your DH is able to do the same.

learner Praying for you and Mr L. Probably good he doesn't believe it why don't you plan a good night out tomorrow?

Learnergran Mon 02-Jul-12 15:36:06

Thank you.
Following an endoscopy and biopsies he has been told he has stomach cancer, which is what both his parents died of in their sixties. He is 64. He doesn't believe it and says he has never felt better.
Scan tomorrow for stage and spread and will hear on Thursday if they are able to operate.
Having to talk calmly to the girls has calmed me.
It all just seems totally unreal.
Thank you so much for your supporting posts. I can't tell you how much it means.

Sorry to hear your news Learnergran but medical know-how is improving all the time flowers

I wrote some poems once. Put 'em on Mumsnet. But then they decided to scrap the topic. Bye bye poems. grin

They were probably crap anyway.

Learnergran, will say a little prayer for your DH. It's all I can do.

Modern medicine and treatments can do marvels these days. x

Learnergran Mon 02-Jul-12 11:04:49

Thank you so much everyone for your kindness. I've had to shut myself in the bathroom for a bit of a cry.
I've also told both DD (not DS yet - will have to work up to that) and had a long talk to both of them over the phone, which has helped enormously. There is nobody here I can talk to.
We will know more on Thursday - not long to wait.

learner so sorry to hear that and I do hope the outcome will be positive. I know how devastated I would feel if it were me DH.

greatnan really loved that heartfelt poem...think God must have smiled on me the day I met my other half who is all of those things, think he thought if he was going to give me a load to carry,he would send me someone to share the load with he is my rocksunshine

flowerfriend Mon 02-Jul-12 08:59:20

Greatnan I enjoyed the poem. I had a happy second marriage. He was almost perfect...............just enough not perfect to be real.
Learnergran Cancer is not a death sentence. The husband of a close friend was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer two years ago. They have just returned from a cruise holiday. He is back in work and walks his dog and does the garden. However, my husband died nearly two years ago after two operations for a cancer in the bladder. One op. to remove the bladder and one to sort out complications. But he was 81 and I think that two long operations were just too much for his body.
I hope you can be strong for your husband but also for yourself. Remember to take care of yourself as well as him. Hugs. xx

Learner so sorry, we are all with you whenever you need us xx flowers

whenim64 Mon 02-Jul-12 07:37:45

Learnergran it's so difficult to put into words the feelings you have when someone you love gets a diagnosis like cancer. It's as though whatever you try to say belittles what you want to express, but in time you will find yourself talking about it and other aspects of your lives, and you will get lots of support on here, as you know. Each day brings something different - little signs for optimism and more information about how you will manage things together. Take care x flowers

j04 Sun 01-Jul-12 22:41:13

Which I'm sure you do! (she add hastily!) smile

j04 Sun 01-Jul-12 22:38:45

I like that poem Greatnan.

I don't think you're likely to find it all in a man though. Better to try to find it in yourself.

Learnergran Sun 01-Jul-12 22:13:36

Thank you Jeni

jeni Sun 01-Jul-12 22:12:51

Thanks.
Learner gran. If I can help, pm me.
My husband died. From cancer. I've been there.
I am cognisant of benefits etc:
If I can help, let me know.
