Does anyone know of any unusual side effects? I'm not talking about the well known long term issues.

whitewave Mon 02-Jul-12 10:07:11

I guess that a bunged up Tum is very usual that is what happens to me.

Anagram Mon 02-Jul-12 10:17:06

What are the well-known long term issues? confused

AlisonMA Mon 02-Jul-12 10:21:34

Ana not sure but I know there are some! I'm sure someone will tell us.

All the NSAIDs can cause stomach irritation and heartburn. When I use voltarol (similar but stronger) I deliver it by suppository and have less problems.

Blimey whats a NSAID? Yes also heartburn for me I have been taking them lately for pain from mouth ulcers shall stop immediately as I thought it was my diet?! Not sure if they are the correct stuff to take for mouth ulcers but I generally take absolutely nothing as I am a great believer in letting your body sort itself out if it possibly can.

I get NO side effects from Ibu. Just don't take too many, or for a very long period of time.

It is one of the best pain relievers, over the counter or on prescription. IMO.

I'm pretty sure heartburn is common anyway as we get older. Probably nothing to do with the Ibuprofen. 10 mgs Omeprazole daily (prescription - don't pay Boots' ridiculous price) takes care of my acid indigestion. No side that I have noticed.

just pop 'effects' in there please

nelliedeane Mon 02-Jul-12 11:39:17

when I worked in pharmacy was taught diabetics, asthmatics, ulcers, high blood pressure shouldn't take them....NSAID is non steroidal anti inflammatory drug

AlisonMA Mon 02-Jul-12 11:44:23

Nellie some of the things which apply to diabetics also apply to people with thyroid issues, does this one?

artygran Mon 02-Jul-12 11:48:40

JO4, I am taking daily Omeprazole and have been told not to take ibuprofen (which I have always set great store by as an anti inflammatory), only paracetamol (which I don't). ?????

j04 Mon 02-Jul-12 11:55:59

My doc has never told me that artygran! Ibu can irritate the stomach if used long term. I would only advocate a fairly occasional use. The Omeprazole helps to protect the stomach when you do have to take it.

You just have to be sensible don't you?

j04 Mon 02-Jul-12 11:58:57

I'm not sure there is an anti-inflammatory that doesn't irritate the stomach when taken for any length of time. That's why doctors sometimes prescribe omeprazole with them, when they feel it's necessary.

jeni Mon 02-Jul-12 12:03:39

Doesn't even have to be prolonged use.

nanaej Mon 02-Jul-12 12:07:59

My GP said prolonged reg use of Omeprazole also not good!! I avoid Ibuprofen as it does trigger digestive probs for me but i guess sometines it is lesser of two evils!!

AlisonMA Mon 02-Jul-12 12:14:53

nanaej would that also apply to Lansoprazole which is an alternative?

HildaW Mon 02-Jul-12 12:24:35

I know you have to take it after some food, I get a nasty bit of sciatica from time to time (old slipped disc episodes) and Dr recommended using the cream locally......found it really works to take the 'edge off'.

Annika Mon 02-Jul-12 12:26:02

I have an Hiatus hernia and I know that if I take Ibuprofen for more than two days in a row I get terrible heartburn and pain, thats even when taken with Omeprazole !

Annobel Mon 02-Jul-12 12:28:42

I have been taking Omeprazole with no ill effects for several years to control acid reflux which affects my larynx. I also have Ranitidine and Gaviscon Advance. These were prescribed by the ENT consultant.

Mishap Mon 02-Jul-12 12:30:27

Yup! - omeprazole dodgy long term too! It caused me to have little polyps in my stomach - guy looking down the camera said he had never seen so many!
We can't win!

j04 Mon 02-Jul-12 12:39:53

NICE still seems to advocate it (omeprazole) guideline states that long term care should emphasise ‘patient empowerment’, for example, by promoting ‘on demand’ use of the lowest dose of a proton pump inhibitor (PPI)

j04 Mon 02-Jul-12 12:41:34

That link doesn't work. On son's puter and can't it work very well. That is a direct quote from the latest guidelines, as far as I can see. (2004)

j04 Mon 02-Jul-12 12:44:53

Mishap, do polyps in your stomach matter? We are bound to get some little blips here and there as we get older.

I guess we have to decide whether we want a nice life now, or prolong life for a year or two at the end, when we don't really know much about anything. grin

I know which I'll take!

Annobel Mon 02-Jul-12 12:49:48

I also have some very small polyps, but the consultant was not concerned. I would prefer to have these rather than frequently lose my voice which I did before my diagnosis and treatment.
