you bought an old statue of a lady clutching her robe, unsuccessfully, round her bosom, what would you actually do with it when you got home? confused I paid eighteen quid for it. (I did knock seller down from twenty, so that's alright. hmm)

And, a tabletop chiminea? At 32 cms high it's too big to put on the table, and you couldn't have a little fire in it in the dining room - could you?

And then there's the garden gnome holding a notice in front of his cross looking self, saying,"GO AWAY". Why did I buy that? confused

What happens to brains on holiday?

I like the sound of the gnome! I've still got Mr Happy in my garden, badly in need of a lick of paint but still reminding me of holidays in Cornwall long long ago. At least you didn't bring them home and give them to someone else; that would have been awkward for the recipients sad. I hope I'm not giving you bad ideas there, though......

Sorry, jingle, I have never bought anything on holiday that I didn't need! Not even a donkey in Spain!
I am sure you could sell them on e-bay, or give them to your charity shop.

I'm going to give the gnome to my grandson. He, being a seven year old teenager, will feel an affinity with it. smile

Anagram Wed 04-Jul-12 15:05:45

The statue sounds nice! Couldn't you put it in the garden?

j04 Wed 04-Jul-12 15:06:55

Actually, the ten year old can have the chiminea to cook sausages on in the garden! He'd like that!

Or I could.....!

Just the bare bosomed lady to sort out now.

Outside DH's shed? Yep. Sounds ok. smile

I wish I had such a wise old head on my shoulders as you do Greatnan.

Greatnan Wed 04-Jul-12 15:44:52

Just hang on, jingle, it comes with great age!
The trouble with being logical and rational, though, is that your neat plans are often screwed up by your illogical and irrational relations! Especially sisters!

Annobel Wed 04-Jul-12 15:47:40

Blimey jingl, where did you go for that holiday?

j04 Wed 04-Jul-12 15:53:27

Only Devon. confused It's not the location. It's just being on holiday. hmm

She looks quite nice by the pond. (furthest point from the house)

Greatnan Wed 04-Jul-12 15:56:07

To illustrate my last remark (Jonah in the Whale......) I paid £120 for a plane ticket from Manchester to Nice for my sister to visit me when I lived in Monaco. She duly arrived, but her suitcase didn't and I spent several hours hassling Air France. She then said 'It might not have got on the plane - they were just taking away the steps when I got there and I had to run across the tarmac'.
Apart from not telling me this before I made an idiot of myself with AF, I wondered why she was so late. She said their car would not start. I asked why she didn't call a cab. She said it would have cost £10. The fare was non-refundable.
I love my sister dearly, but she manages something like this every time I arrange anything for her.

Annobel Wed 04-Jul-12 16:03:40

Greatnan, what do you mean by 'great age'? I happen to know we are the same age. I don't feel that ancient! And you don't look it!

Greatnan Wed 04-Jul-12 16:14:31

I don't feel it, either, but the calendar does not lie!
I reckon I might have only 30 years left.

Anne58 Wed 04-Jul-12 16:34:40

Where in Devon?

j04 Wed 04-Jul-12 17:17:18

phoenix we were in Dorset for a few days then went on to son's house in Exeter.

Why do you ask [bites nails nervously]

jeni Wed 04-Jul-12 17:22:21

I've a small garden pool. I've been looking for a nice statue of the god Priapus to go by it.
I thought it would make change from the usual cherubs, dolphins, half naked ladies etc.
If anyone has one they don't want perhaps they would consider my poolside as a suitable home for him?

Ariadne Wed 04-Jul-12 17:27:00

jeni what an excellent idea! If you had jingl's lady statue, maybe she would drop her robes in delight at Priapus. If I see such a statue on my travels, I shall buy it for you.

Anne58 Wed 04-Jul-12 17:29:12

Only because I live in Devon.

absentgrana Wed 04-Jul-12 17:30:14

Charity shop – no question, no doubts.

jeni Wed 04-Jul-12 17:37:27

ariadne Thankyou. I've been looking for years. There was a wonderful one in the cambrio segredo in Naples museum, but the guard wouldn't let me take it!sad

Anagram Wed 04-Jul-12 18:15:36

Hmm..have you googled for this statue, jeni? It's amazing what you can find....wink

j04 Wed 04-Jul-12 18:18:09

It's ok phoenix. It's quite a big county. smile

grin

jeni Wed 04-Jul-12 18:19:59

Of course!
You can get lots of pictures of the painting outside the house of the Vetii on Pompeii, and pictures of the lovely alabaster statue of the Priapus in the room off the kitchen in the same house (definitely not circumcised)
But actual stone statues , no!
My life is in ruins because of this misfortune!sad

j04 Wed 04-Jul-12 18:23:18

What this Priapus *jeni? shock

Suppose you could hang a flower basket or two from it. hmm

Anagram Wed 04-Jul-12 18:23:35

You could always take up statue-making! grin
(I'm sure there must be a proper name for it)
