Wow! President Hollande has admitted that the forced deportation of Jewish families from Paris to Nazi death camps was carried out almost entirely by the French, to the grateful surprise of the German occupiers.
German children are probably much more knowledgeable about the atrocities committed during the war than either French or British children.

Is this another historical account that is about to be changed? Where did you read about it Greatnan? I haven't come across this story yet.

Found it in a few European papers online, where it's still breaking news. You've got to be up early to keep up with Greatnan! grin

Japanese children are even more ignorant about atrocities committed by their country during WW2. My father lost several good friends in Stanley POW Camp in Hong Kong, they died under terrible conditions and against all rules of the Geneva Convention.

dorsetpennt Japan wasn't a signatory of the Geneva Conventions.

Sorry to be late replying - I have been taking my car for its Controle Technique - the French MOT. It passed!
I wake very early, about 6 a.m. which is 5 a.m. UK time and there is usually nobody else around except bags. I trawl most of the UK papers and a couple of French papers but I can't remember in which one I found this story.
I read a report that a large number of British children think Churchill is just the dog in the insurance advert.
Dutch children visit war graves each year and place flowers. Perhaps if you have not been occupied you feel differently about the war.

Visiting Amsterdam I could not but remember Anne Frank and in Normandy the fact that it was a battlefield following D Day cannot be overlooked.
The treeless plains of northern France and Belgium seem to still bear witness.
(were they so treeless before 2 world wars...?)
Kevin Rudd said SORRY in Australia. QE2 said Sorry in Ireland.
Time for others to follow suit.

I can't see Japan being prepared to lose face. I don't remember if the Korean women forced to be prostitutes for the Japanese army every received any acknowledgement.
