Respect...
'There was no respect for youth when I was young, and now that I am old, there is no respect for age - I missed it coming and going.' JB Priestly

kitty I recognised them immediately grin

Do the job that's nearest,
Though it's dull at whiles,
Helping when you meet them,
Lame dogs over stiles.

Life is a struggle, not a race,
A wise man keeps an even pace.

The following is from a 50p carboot bargain wink. It's a small teapot minus it's lid now looking very lovely as a vase for old fashioned marigolds.

There would be no shadows,
If the sun were not shining.

Do not walk behind me,I may not want to lead,
Do not walk in front I may not wish to follow,
But walk beside me and be my friend.

I think I have that in the right order.

jeni yes it's Donne but not quite a misquote:
"No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main."

But I was going to say 'Women hold up half the sky'........

My dad wrote this in my autograph book, when I was about 12. Don't have the autograph book, (or my dad), but this is the one thing in the book that has stayed with me.
Don't look for the faults, as you go through life,
and even if you find them,
It's wise and kind, to be sometimes blind,
and look for the virtues behind them.

My dad incidentally was a lovable rogue, who lived on the edge of the law. I was the light of his life.

If a thing is worth doing, it's worth doing badly.

If you are going to do as you would be done by, make sure the person you are doing by wants to be done by the same way that you do.

Home

A little house well filled,
A little land well tilled
A little wife well willed

In Praise Of Ale

He that buys land buys many stones;
He that buys flesh buys many bones;
He that buys eggs buys many shells;
But he that buys good ale buys nothing else.

My Mums was 'least said soonest mended'.....she loathed all this modern attitude about talking stuff through over and over......must say I have come to realise that in some circumstances its not a bad idea. Somethings are best just forgotten and forgiven.

Righteousness...Chinese proverb

Hilda W your posting me reminded me of something my mother used to say to me ' if you have nothing good to say about someone then say nothing at all' . I still hear her say it if I am considering saying something that isn't perhaps the kindest about someone else.smile

HildaW Fri 27-Jul-12 11:22:58

Grannybug, yes I think its not a bad mantra, can imagine my Grandma saying it....she was old school blunt and to the point but never malicious or spiteful.

Apt words have power to 'swage
The tumours of a troubled mind,
And are as balm to festered wounds. MILTON

"There is nothing good or bad but thinking makes it so." (Hamlet)

The only way to get something done is to DO it. (my mantra to students whinging about how much homework they had to do.)

eGJ Sun 29-Jul-12 10:22:06

There's a lot of good done in this world if you don't mind who gets the credit.

Those that mind don't matter; those that matter don't mind. (very useful for numerous situations!!
