I'm wondering how similar everyone's connection with Gransnet is. Here's mine - I used to boot up my lap top, check my emails, read some newspaper headlines or articles, look up the weather etc etc. Just a leisurely little browse with my coffee. Now, I dash through just my emails, because I can't wait to Log in to Gransnet! Far more interesting than any magazine or paper! The wide ranging and diverse topics, the laughter and the heartaches shared, the little arguments that develop and then are resolved. It is a triumph.
But here's a confession, I don't tell anyone that I am a member. Not even DH. If I told him, he'd start spying and making disparaging comments - you know the sort - they usually start with the word "Women!" That would spoil it for me.
So come on, 'fess up, who else is a closet Gransnetter?

merlotgran Tue 31-Jul-12 15:33:01

My lot know about GN. I often pass snippets across to DH as I use the laptop when he's watching telly. Thanks to a thread about benefits I realised we could claim a reduction on our TV licence because DH is registered blind. Not only that....They refunded £150 because I'd been paying the full whack since his registration. Cheers Gransnet!!! wine grin

Well I am certainly addicted. I check it every time I log on. My DiL was a bit surprised when I told her I was going to Birmingham for lunch (Midlands Meet up), but that is one of the benefits of being retired, you can't do that if your are working or a you are a young mum or both.
Getting older is quite good fun really.

Anagram Tue 31-Jul-12 16:57:05

Blimey, nellie, how old is that son of yours? Can't he cook??? hmm
You need to put your foot down with a firm hand!

MrsJamJam Tue 31-Jul-12 19:37:09

I'm definitely still in the closet, but if any of my family came on here they would recognise me from my user name. I'm lucky that DH and I each have our own computers, because when I retired from work I found that trying to share a computer just didn't work. So he's in his study doing 'important' things on his and I'm on the sofa in the kitchen with a laptop on my knees and a cross cat who wants a lap to sit on!

And I have been known to check GN on my smartphone when we are away from home, but I do try to resist!

My DD told me about it and persuaded me to try it?

I have mentioned gransnet to people and, being a bloke, they probably think I'm odd. I am not myself sure that this is a place for a man so I may just fade away. It's a longish story but I was invited to register to post an e-petition and I have hung around since. I do feel like an outsider but the topics are varied and the discussion is polite, maybe because there are not too many men around. In another place I have been online, discussion of politics and religion have been banned because the 'debate' invariably became a slanging match. Whether I stay or go, I think gransnet is a bit special.

Anagram Tue 31-Jul-12 20:31:14

Oh, don't go Frankel! It's good to get a male slant on things sometimes, and you seem to fit in just fine. smile

MrsJamJam Tue 31-Jul-12 20:32:53

I do agree about the 'special'. I've tried one or two forums in the past, but this one shines out for the intelligence and thoughtfulness of most of the comment - and the delightful humour from time to time.

whenim64 Tue 31-Jul-12 21:13:40

You're one of us now Frankel so stick around smile

merlotgran Tue 31-Jul-12 21:16:10

You might confuse crimson though, Frankel seeing as you share the same name as her favourite racehorse grin

crimson Tue 31-Jul-12 21:29:30

Perhaps Frankel is called Frankel because he is his second biggest fan in which case he'll have to stick around.

Littlenellie Tue 31-Jul-12 21:39:30

soop Wed 01-Aug-12 11:20:31

Nellie ...introduce Frankel to the boys in the games room. hmm

gillybob Wed 01-Aug-12 11:36:33

Unfortunately due to work and family commitments I can't access GN everyday, but on the days that I can I find that I am on and off most of the day. Sometimes just reading, having a giggle, sympathising (and I must admit shedding the occasional tear) I tend to post only if I have something relevant to add.

janthea Wed 01-Aug-12 13:26:04

I try to look at GN every day when I'm at work - if work doesn't interfere! Don't always get a chance at weekends at the moment as DD and her family have been living with me between houses. My evenings are taken up with helping with the children, cooking, washing, etc. The weekends are pretty much the same. BUT they completed on their new house today. So I will be getting my life back very soon. I use my iPad to check in at weekends and evenings. If only there was an iPhone app, I could check in even more often!! grin

Littlenellie Wed 01-Aug-12 17:19:23

frankel come with me to Lils I will introduce you to my very good friends pete and gramps think they might encourage you to stay and play xx

Frankel Wed 01-Aug-12 22:12:48

I do like the horse and I like the story of how it brought his trainer back to the top after some bumpy years. I like the name too. Thanks for all the kind comments. I'll look in when I can - I've been busy being Grandan all day today smile

soop Thu 02-Aug-12 13:25:24

Frankel If you venture to Lil's bar...be warned...grin

gramps Thu 02-Aug-12 22:04:07

We'll look out for you Greatnan!
I "play" for the other side, but enjoy this "Mag" - Especially Lil's Bar.
Well - What else did you expect!

Seriously though, I'm very impressed with this publication! smile

Anagram Thu 02-Aug-12 22:09:01

What are you on about, gramps? Have you been at the home-grown produce in Lil's back yard again? grin

JO4 Thu 02-Aug-12 22:11:07

The Oldie is a publication. Gransnet is just this website. grin
