Boris Johnson

By rights I should hate Boris Johnson. He's everything I despise about our society. Privileged by accident of birth, Eton educated, rich from family wealth rather than person effort, Tory, totally unable to imagine life as an ordinary person....the list is endless. But then Boris opens his mouth and the most bizarre words come out. He makes me laugh and how can I not like a man who makes me laugh? How can you not laugh when a politician (people who normally watch every word they say) comes out with,

'As I write these words there are semi-naked women playing beach volleyball in the middle of the Horse Guards Parade immortalised by Canaletto. They are glistening like wet otters and the water is plashing off the brims of the spectators' sou'westers. The whole thing is magnificent and bonkers.'

I can't help it. I love Boris.

" how on earth do people know what they are voting for"

Sweet Jezus jess, I think that just about sums it up.

JessM Fri 10-Aug-12 22:12:32

well I guess they did know what they were voting for with red ken cos he what he is, and he had done the job before a few times.

I agree, Jess. I suspect that many Londoners didn't see Boris as just any old Conservative but as a 'personality', a 'celebrity'. I wouldn't mind betting that a lot of people who would be inclined to vote Labour in a Parliamentary election voted for Boris the 'character'. And, of course, the red-tops rubbished Ken. If I'd been in London I'd have opted for Brian Paddick too.

Brian Paddick? He was so, so boring.....

Annobel Fri 10-Aug-12 22:17:33

I'd go for boring but reliable any day.

Anagram Fri 10-Aug-12 22:19:42

Who's to say he'd have been reliable? His record as police chief wasn't terribly reassuring.

I am pleased to know I was wrong to associate some comments with being left or right of politics.

So that means, if Ken was Tory and Boris Labour those who dislike Boris would be happy to have a Tory London Mayor in Ken.

Great, voting for the person not the party.

Some do though Pogs , believe it or not

In my opinion what people see in Boris is the personality, not the person.

Bags Sat 11-Aug-12 10:25:23

I agree, anno, but I think the same can be said for most persons so much in the public eye hmm

It was definitely true of Tony Blair!
