Just read that the people who won the 148 million live about 20 odd miles from here , not that thats got much to do with the price of cheese . What must that be like , mind boggling , suppose give plenty away to progeny, set them up nicely . May the people enjoy their money ! smile

With two children marrying this year I'm reduced to old habits soop - have checked all pockets, down the back of the sofa, in all the drawers and old handbags.... every penny counts this year! wink

soop Thu 16-Aug-12 13:48:57

grannyact...every little helps.

Yes, I wonder, too. If they'd opted for no publicity they could have at least attempted to get their heads round it a bit before choosing who, if anyone, to tell.

I am in the fairly unique position of having 'won' some money on the lottery without even knowing that I'd entered. grin A few weeks ago one of my language students asked me to give her a number, which I duly did. The following week she told me I had given her a winning number for her lottery ticket and gave me a fourth share of her winnings; I received £2.20!

Seriously though, I do wonder why lottery winners opt for publicity after such big payouts; I worry for the unintended consequences for them.

glamma Good for you...flowers

I was delighted to win £161.00 on Irish Lottery last month on a 25p stake my mid week gamble paid off that day grin

gracesmum Thu 16-Aug-12 12:03:14

Don't we all play the "game of how we would spend our winnings"? And the minimum we would "need" to give everybody enough (but not so much that it blighted their lives) and which charities would get how much - if we are not sound asleep by that time zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzgrin

Nonu Thu 16-Aug-12 11:01:23

Oh how sweet , Hunt grin

Anagram Wed 15-Aug-12 23:25:31

grin Hunt!

My 90 year old aunt used to do the lottery untli one day she thought,''I couldn't cope with the winnings'' and stopped buying tickets!

Congratulations to the lucky winners. I hope they are well supported and guided in how to manage it all! They did seem grounded and hope the future for them and their family is wonderful.

POGS Wed 15-Aug-12 16:40:44

I think they do look like a nice couple. I just hope that the disgusting internet trolls don't spoil it for them. There must be a lot of hidden problems, such as, worrying about protecting family to think about.

Good luck to them. It seems they were a decent family and I am glad it has gone to people like them.

Anagram Wed 15-Aug-12 15:09:25

grin absent. With that amount of money you probably wouldn't give a fig about CTT....

absentgrana Wed 15-Aug-12 14:58:39

Dream on … but don't forget that you may give only a limited sum of money to son and daughters each year without incurring capital transfer tax. [wet blanket emoticon]

glammanana Wed 15-Aug-12 11:43:04

How grounded and down to earth the lucky couple seem, they certainly seem to have their heads on the right way it will certainly take them a while for it to sink in the enormus amount they have won but good for them.I would also do as most of other GNers and support Local St Johns Hospice and Christies in Manchester 10 or 20 million each would not make a dent in it.The only thing that I would buy myself is a car the same as this lucky Lady has chosen an Audi Q7 the big brother of my little audi (it will probably fit in the boot)I have no interest in moving house but family could buy their own houses.

They sound like really decent people, but I hope it brings them the happiness they deserve and isn't a poisoned chalice.

crimson Wed 15-Aug-12 10:02:56

You could buy Greece with that much money and declare yourself Queen/King grin. Actually think of the good you could do with it once you've sorted the family out and bought that old rectory in the Dorset countryside. As well as UK charities I'd love to build a maternity hospital in the remote area of Kenya. The mortality rate for the mums and babies is very high and this would help enormously. Also I'd approach Water Aid and get decent wells dug in Africa so women/girls don't have to walk miles for the family water. Note it is women I'm helping. In Africa they are the ones who do most of the work.

Ooh I wondered where that post For granny4 had gone....confused

Barrow Tue 14-Aug-12 16:09:15

If I won that much I would immediately give £10m each to my favourite charities - St. Peter's Hospice and Children's Hospice South West. These are both very worthwhile charities and need all the help they can get. After that I would invest enough to ensure I had an income on which I could live comfortably then start looking at what other charities I could help. I already live in a nice house so wouldn't need to move and have a nice little car - no sports cars for me! I would probably treat my sisters in law (who have been so supportive) to a week in a spa where we could all be pampered. Nice to daydream!

Littlenellie Tue 14-Aug-12 14:54:59

granny4 I don't have a suggestion to offer...but I am sending you a huge hug and hope collectively we can support you [ flowers ]xxxxlove Nellie

If ever we were to win a modest fortune [not a hope, as can't afford the tickets] we would have the best time ever - making lists of family and friends and lots of deserving charities. The village needs a new community centre. We could afford to build a wee home in the village, and let family use our present home as a holiday cottage. I would love a black Mini Cooper convertible. We could have regular weekends away in nice, Scottish hotels. We could travel 1st class on the train. I wouldn't need to do another's ironing and brass cleaning [but would probably do so because I like the lady for whom I work.] Without a doubt, we would enjoy our windfall. Giving much of it away, would be the cherry on the cake. sunshine smile

AlisonMA Tue 14-Aug-12 13:34:23

I would just like to win the 1 million then I could give £250,000 to each son and have the same amount for us. That would enable them all to either buy a bigger house or pay off their mortgage but not enough to give up work.

If I did win the huge amount I have already dicided to set up a charity to help the long-term unemployed get back into work.

glassortwo Tue 14-Aug-12 12:50:31

Well green if I had been his partner I would have been long gone before now I can tell you, grin

greenmossgiel Tue 14-Aug-12 12:43:27

For her sake, I hope he wins then, glass! grin
