Apart from choosing a new name, I've been slathering Germolene on insect bites - how lovely is that? My new name doesn't make one think of Germolene and insect bites! It's the time of year for these and I'm covered in large itchy bumps...grin

Hello, Nosila (interesting name!) and welcome. Glad you've decided to join us. smile

Can remember having an argument with an overbearing teacher when my son had the wrong shade of grey for his uniform,I queried wether the right shade would aid his learning ability, and his ability to be less of an a**e

Hello all, today, apart from dealing with a fairly serious flood at work, I've set up a profile on GNet. I've been lurking around the forum for a little while trying to find the right moment to introduce myself and join in the conversations. I hope no one minds but I've already taken some advice meant for other people. I was beginning to feel like an eavesdropper though, so I've come out from behind my virtual pillar to make myself known. smile

bags FFS why are people so hung up about what kids wear! I admit I am not a strong advocate of uniform and as a HT never really worried about it much but my colleague HT in the Junior School believed that a tidy child( ie in a neat and prescriptive uniform) had tidy mind and enforced her uniform code very robustly! I believe that comfortable child is a child more likely to learn!
I know parents find a uniform easier / more equalising etc but honestly..socks, tights, leggings..it needs to be proportionate!!

Thanks Ella. I'm not too envious about climbing a waterfall, Greatnan, but I'm really green, really, really green over the lake. We do have the Norfolk Broads nearby but I don't like putting my feet down in gunky mud. Hopefully we'll have time to head for the beach before the weather breaks.

Bags I'm feeling [mad] with you. When my son started to vomit en route to Latin lessons, he explained that the master frightenened him witless. I wrote a strong letter [without son knowing] and suggested that the master provided son with a sick bag. Same evening, son said that the master had asked him to go to his study. My heart lurched. I needed the sick bag! Then son expressed his relief at having received an apology from master. Master confessed to being unaware that some pupils feared him. Thereafter, there was no need for the sick bag.

They do tend to get a bit hot under the collar about school uniform, don't they? But I agree, it's not the child's fault (certainly not in this case!), and any discussion about it should be with the parent.

nanaej Tue 21-Aug-12 18:08:06

Not a good start to the new school year sad Why do some teachers throw their weight about so unnecessarily?

Hope said teacher is not a newbie who has been advised to 'start tough' otherwise his /her mum might be writing back to you Bags!

Nonu Tue 21-Aug-12 18:07:06

Some teachers can be overbearing , even ex teachers , but I do feel for you , no-one wants their child upset

Bags Tue 21-Aug-12 18:03:29

No, crushing is not my intention. I've asked him to be kind and reasonable and not to blame a child for or frighten a child about something that is neither the child's fault nor the child's responsibility.

The sin?

She wore leggings and socks instead of tights under her skirt. She hasn't got any tights. I've ordered some.

Bloody bully!

Some people are SO petty!

Anagram Tue 21-Aug-12 17:58:42

Is that your intention, Bags? 'Crush' seems a bit strong....

Greatnan Tue 21-Aug-12 17:56:50

I am sure you will be more than able to crush 'overbearing' bags!

Greatnan Tue 21-Aug-12 17:55:54

Join the club, jeni!
I am addicted to sudoku - it is so easy to carry a small book on planes and it means you are never bored. I tend to nod off in the afternoons when I am watching TV and surfing. And again in the evenings when I am watching TV and surfing..................I am very alert at 6 a.m. though!

Anagram Tue 21-Aug-12 17:53:27

Oh no, Bags! Already....

Bags Tue 21-Aug-12 17:50:29

Feeling ruffled, indirectly, by an overbearing teacher at DD's new school. Hoping she exaggerated the story, but writing a stiff letter to Overbearer, with copy to be delivered to Head of Year. Grrr.

Grannyeggs Tue 21-Aug-12 17:45:22

How fabulous to climb to a waterfall and swim in it,you have made a great life for yourself,*greatnan*. I was in a train today coming back from Glasgow, played a lot of Soduku. I slept too, it worries me that when sititing for an extended period I always drift off to sleep, a sign of advancing years? hmm

jeni Tue 21-Aug-12 17:39:06

I don't want to know greatnan there are times when I positively dislike you!grin

Greatnan Tue 21-Aug-12 17:32:54

nfk - I feel more tired reading about your day than I did climbing up to a waterfall and swimming!

jeni Tue 21-Aug-12 17:29:24

Stuck! A bomb scare in Bristol led to me waiting an hour for my taxi in the pouring rain with nowhere to sit even! I'm cold, wet and miserable!
Be dammed to diets! I'm having a stiff drink!

Ella46 Tue 21-Aug-12 17:21:50

Nfk flowers You deserve them xx (and the G&T)

kittylester Tue 21-Aug-12 17:20:59

ga Congratulations - we can worry together! wine

I made a hat because two daughters wanted to go on a hat making day and, if I'm honest, the woman running the course did the hard bits of mine ie most of it! Both daughters made fabulous ones though - they obviously get their arty side from someone else.sad I am thinking (at the moment!!) of trousers (dreadful legs) and some sort of jacket-y thing! [slightly worried/ panicky emoticon]

I mentioned that I couldn't do bunting but I know a gracesmum who can! grin

Today I took my mother to the hospital for a fitting of her new boots wot they are making for her, bless them.

Wheelchair into car, help mum into car, drive to hospital, nowhere to park so enter through wrong entrance, haul mum out of car and into wheelchair, Spend 20 minutes trying to find right place, wait 40 minutes in hot stuffy waiting area ( not too long - early appointment). At least she likes the look of the boots although whether she'll wear them is a different matter. Get lost again trying to find our back out. (I could see the car through a window - but couldn't get to it.) loose my cool with a voice in the machine at the exit gate as I hadn't quite followed the right procedures with my ticket and no he wouldn't let us through we would have to back up, re-park and get it authorised by which time the last disabled slot had been taken so I rebeliously double parked and ran in as fast as my knees would let me. By this time it was nearly lunch time so we called back to mum's house to pick up her Dog Who Must Be Obeyed and around whom the world revolves, and go to our favourite pub for lunch. (Had to give dog a run first of course.) Nice people in pub are willing to serve us in the car and we can park facing the river. Time to relax for half an hour before heading to do the shopping, drive back to mum's, unload shopping, wheelchair, mother and dog. Then I just had to change the sheets, do the washing up, clear up a bit and get her tea ready, have a cup of tea while sorting out bills and stuff before driving home.

Am now sitting here with a large G & T and wondering how on earth full time carers cope.

Kitty, it seems we're sharing a wedding day; my son is also getting married on 10th November - and it is my second wedding of the year too as my daughter was married a couple of months ago. I am very impressed that you've made a hat; I'm pondering whether to wear a dress/coat combination or dress/jacket as it will probably be quite cool and the church is just off the seafront so the wind can be a bit chilly. I will definitely wear a hat though as I'm delighted to have the opportunity - would love to have been born in a time when wearing a hat to go out was the norm. Or rather, I wish hat wearing would come back into vogue again. grin
