DH pointed out from the Court Circular in Daily Telegraph, that the Queen attended divine service at Crathie Church on Sunday. "The sermon was preached by the Rev David Cameron" !!!
Was he moonlighting? Doen' she see him enough at audiences at Buck House?
Have you had other experiences of names popping up in unusual places?

Gally Fri 07-Sept-12 01:45:32

DD2 here in Oz has a neighbour with 2 boys; the 3 year old is called Rider and the 8 month old is Hunter - duh! grin

In Leamington Spa there is a firm of Solicitors call Wright Hassell. Their offices are quite large so they must be quite successfull!

Lilygran Thu 06-Sept-12 11:01:16

How about the solicitors in Sligo called Argue and Phibbs? And DH was very taken with the chic young businesswoman being interviewed on an American news programme. Her name was given as Feleny.

Gally Thu 06-Sept-12 09:54:24

There's a newsreader on Channel 7 or is it 9, who is referrred to as ' and now back to Nataarsha'. What the****? How pompous can you get, until I realised that she is actually spelt Natarsha......duh; one to add to my collection on the other thread - goes well with Rebekkar! confused

I told my eldest sister I was sure Orroroo was one of the towns on the Mallee Highway, I was sure I had seen a sign saying Orroroo. She said no, it is a town in the mid north of South Australia. The next time I was driving to Victoria via the Mallee Highway I passed through a town called Pinaroo, as I was leaving I saw a sign which said 'ooroo from Pinaroo'. Ooroo is Aussie lingo for goodbye. No wonder I was confused. confused

In the suburb of Toowong, Brisbane, there is a Chinese restaurant called 'The Two Wongs'.

In the film 'Brassed Off' they called a fish n chip shop 'In Cod We Trust'.

We have some funny place names round here - I particularly like 'Yorky's Knob' a small hill on the way to Nimbin.

We have a local hairdressers called Tangles which really doesn't fill me with confidence.

The nearest fish and chip shop is called The Right Plaice.

I thought my name would be unique until my brother-in-law introduced us to his new girlfriend and her 2 year old daughter who had my first name. They later married and he adopted the daughter making 2 of us with exactly the same name, including middle names, in one family.

nanaej Mon 03-Sept-12 20:23:30

I have often wondered which bright spark came up with the Impact School of Driving.

Bags Mon 03-Sept-12 08:03:17

DD3's as well.

Bags Mon 03-Sept-12 08:02:47

jura, not 100%, but I'm pretty sure my first name last name combo is unique too.

Greatnan Mon 03-Sept-12 06:42:23

I chose my surname after my divorce as I did not like either my married or my birth name. I thought it would be fairly unusual, but there are 127 people with the same first and surname as me on Facebook. I usually have to spell it out in France and even in the UK I have had at least four spellings of what I thought was a straightforward name.

A girl in my class at school was called Wendy Cockshaw - I don't think her parents had thought about the initials. Another girl was called Tannith Diggle. I wonder if either of them are GN members!

The most common name in my class was, surprisingly, not Mary, but Sheila.
(I can still list all 32 classmates in alphabetical order - along with the states of America it is one of my memory tests for myself).

Gally Mon 03-Sept-12 00:59:43

Swindles and Gentry - accountants in Seaford

granjura Sun 02-Sept-12 22:07:06

The Consultant obstetrician who looked after me/us when we had our first was called Mr Club - always a big joke in that area (Staffs).

nanaej Sun 02-Sept-12 21:56:38

There was a plaque on a wall in Darlington..not sure what the guy did ... but as kids we always laughed at it and joked, 'Look there's A Minto on the wall! Don't think they make Mintoes anymore!

Anagram Sun 02-Sept-12 21:02:40

Oh, how could Mr and Mrs Nutt have called their daughter Hazel? Shame...

Granny23 Sun 02-Sept-12 20:56:34

I also had a GP called Dr Bone when I was a child.

One of the specialists at SRI was Dr De'ath.

I went to school with Ellen Nutt and her sister Hazel.

Our unisex hairdresser/barbers is call 'All Cut and Dried'

We used to have solicitors nearby called Welch & Robb and now have a firm called Black & Markie.

No one gave a thought to his name when Christopher Smith joined my DD's class until that unmentionable time of year came round and he was subjected to hundreds of bad jokes featuring Chris Smith's cards, presents, trees, stockings and so on. I believe he is a dad now so he will be Father Chris Smith!

dorsetpennt Sun 02-Sept-12 20:55:23

I remember when my son and DIL were talking about names when my first GD was expected. I said pretend you are a teacher in a playground and you call out the name. If everyone doesn't fall about laughing or with horror the you're ok. smile
